Choosing new small outboard. Honda 4 stroke or Mariner/ Yamaha/ Suzuki 2 stroke

Famous last words?

We are on our second Honda BF2D. Most of the time it is absolutely fine, but the carb clogs up with water from time to time, although the engine is kept covered and I am paranoid about using clean fuel. Cleaning the carb when hanging over the back of the dinghy probably dumps more hydrocarbons into the environment than a hundred Seagulls....

What are you doing to get water in the fuel in the first place? I've never had this issue and I suspect most have not had this issue so worth investigating that rather than blaming the engine.

Back off a bit. Where did I say I blamed the engine? I merely report my experience. If I didn't rate the Honda I would not have persevered with it for eleven years. When I need advice, I generally rush to ask for it.

Sorry, given the thread I thought you were implying that the 4 stroke was the problem. My question still stands though - where does the water come from?
