I have a 30 year old Van Der Stadt sailing yacht (29 ft long) which needs a new engine. Being a bit of an amateur engineer, is there a suitable deisel engine available that I could obtain to marinise myself that would cost me less than buying a new Nanni or Yanmar or Beta. The current engine is a 2 cylinder Petter mini twin (11 HP).

I'm not aware of one of a suitable size, but others will be more knowledgable than me. Why don't you rebuild the existing engine?

define suitable size. - some years ago that would have been a 7hp vire. These days it could be a much bigger engine - ask Nigel Luther, he can waterski behind his! Obviously most car engines for marinisation are very much more powerful than the size normally used in a 29ft yacht - e.g. astra diesel 1700cc = 60hp. This not only has problems when you come to add a gearbox, but also the sheer weight and dimensions in a small boat will make this a silly idea. It would also demand a much bigger fuel tank - again taking up too much space.

The Nanni and the Beta are basically the same engine, except the Beta has an extra plate to try to balance the engine - thus the engine is much smoother, but is also heavier.

I looked at a wooden yacht last weekend that the guy wanted £500 for. It was rubbish, but had a new (to the boat, I think) Kubota 17.5 hp diesel fitted last year.
As usual I don't know where you are, but this is in Kendal.
PM me if you want to know more.

If you remove the engine I could put you in touch with my local engine builder, thats what he does for a living...
Fords, BMC etc

My sea panther (Ford Cortina; Dieselised) was rebuilt for about £1200 so I'm sure yours would be a lot less!

My chap is in Bracknell, BERKS but there must be loads of others.

nannis are based on automotive engines, fiat and toyota , yanmars are toyota , beta are i think kubota ,even the bigger volvo pentas are bus derived, the most difficult parts to make is driving the raw water pump and water cooled exhaust but can be done

Trintella 1 @ a guess. ( Offshore Yachts )
they were fitted with the Sabb 10 / 12 hp single diesel, the Beta twin 18 hp would be fine with more room to fit it than the larger Sabb would have taken.
the Nanni is allegedly better marinized than the Beta, but i would have the Beta.
i fitted a Nanni 4150 3 yrs ago its very good but not £1k better than the Beta
( price difference ).
the Petter minitwin was never a very good engine, based on an industrial engine fitted to generators, water pumps ect & were prone to put con-rods through the crankcase
