Choosing an anemometer

A wind instrument system is just an invitation to constant disappointment as delicate parts are damaged by elements or birds. The inconvenience of having to scale the mast each time is just too much.
I would like to see a system with no moving parts. Perhaps using heated elements that get cooled with wind or perhaps some sort of laser air speed sensing. Perhaps I dream.
