choosing a new stereo for the boat..

I agree with Sailorman, I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 and a Bluetooth boombox, both are rechargeable from the ships cigar lighter socket with a USB insert. You don't need any wires and can put the boombox wherever you want. I have found in my boat the best sound comes from the area opposite the heads!

In my old boat a Hurley 22 I had a car sterio and four waterproof speakers and a 12 CD changer and could have held a mid harbour disco for everyone but would have run out of battery juice pretty quickly. Modern technology is brilliant. I even use Bluetooth tethering from my mobile phone to my Ipad when I'm on or off the boat!

Hope that helps
Kevin

Only those of us of a certain age would refer to this new gadget as a 'Stereo' Lisa!

Not the 9 o'clock news HiFi shop moment......:)

On a slightly similar theme, I found a TDK C90 cassette still in the wrapper in a loft a few weeks ago. I took it home and gave it to my 12 year old daughter and asked her what she thought it did.

When I told her you had to basically guess how far to rewind it for a song she was quite shocked!

Why does the blurb on the Kenwood unit linked to mention ' Russian Text Display ' ?

Be very wary of the power requirements, and if you haven't got a battery monitor it would be a good idea with this sort of kit !

I had a similar Clarion marine audio system and was very disappointed with the reliability plus power consumption, sold what was still working on at a considerable loss.

It did have a properly waterproof hard wired remote control in the cockpit though which I found among the most useful things about it, think I'd look for this if going for marine audio again.

The Clarion waterproof speakers were heavy and the cones rusted, only the faces were waterproof; so siting is important.

I bought a Chinese stereo from Ebay for £14, as I like trying out cheap gadgets. It plays from USB storage and SD/microSD cards and probably ipods. Makes me wonder what it amplifies the sound with (4x50w) as it is almost empty inside.

My father in law referred to such a device as a "wireless" :)

Ok dinosaur alert! (eek, when did that happen!)
What are you supposed to call these things nowadays then?

I hadn't thought about the power consumption, but can a car radio/CD player/mp3 player/wotsit/music sound system amplifier gadget thingy be any worse than anything else I might use (or what I have at the moment?).

As liveaboards, we do still have CDs that we weren't able to copy to mp3 (or whatever THAT is called) - so the cd player is important. We already have a car radio/cd player in the nav room that plays to speakers that are already wired in the saloon and the sound is pretty good. I like the idea of a remote control suggested by SandDune - didn't think you could get a remote control for a car stereo - excellent!

I've got a pioneer 'stereo' :) from Halfords that plays CD's, Bluetooth's from your phone, has one of the little headphone sockets, a USB so you can plug an iPod in and charge phones and tablets etc and it even has a wireless for ones favourite radio programmes!

It was about £150 and they do one without the CD for about £75.

Unfortunately the one I installed in the boat doesn't do CD's as when I bought it it didn't occur to me that you couldn't put a cd in it because it looks like a car CD player!

ICE - In Car Entertainment!
PS... if you plug in an ipod/iphone/android device with bluetooth, then increasingly nowadays, plotters can control the music too! (worth bearing in mind if you are planning a nav system upgrade in the future)
