Choosing a 22ft trailer sailor for six

Hi Rob Blame my Wayfarer and boat tent for all this..... and I've still got her. It was sleeping out that made me want to share it with the kids but my lot in a Wayfarer now I don't think so ( I like my sleep). Still concerned about 6 into 22 but the fun of the Jeanneau is over-riding and my wife nailed it this morning when she said she reckoned we would only be doing the occasional one nighter, not even two except maybe half term and leaving the big one behind!

Thanks for the Westerly reply but I want a boat that can take the ground. One day a keel boat but not yet.

The smaller westerlies are almost all twin keel & take the ground well.

6 on a day out to a beach is not a big problem, most of the time most of the "crew" will be on the beach or in the water. The problems occur at mealtimes - can you cook for 6 on a 2burner & grill? Can you carry all the cutlery. crockery & pans? Can you sit everyone down to eat? On my 32' with 5 aboard, my son & I tend to eat in the cockpit to allow others to sort out the food. You will also need to do dishes & tidy up (plenty of people to help) right away - you will not cope with 6 aboard unless everthing is kept in its place unless actually in use.

Overnighting has similar problems, does anyone need privacy to get dressed/ undressed? washing & toilet routines need to be sorted & followed. Carrying 6 sets of wet gear & spare clothing is difficult & heavy rain will keep everyone below - is that possible?

But at least a small boat makes it easy enough to singlehand when all the ladies decide enough is enough.:D

You have described the other side of the argument bang on. I can't dispute anything other than I chose my name with care, I don't always plan to sail with full crew and my wife is a culinary genius camping..... and err privacy/ discretion has not been err... a requirement for us. We do plan to use those luxurious IOW marinas/harbours if the going gets tough. I'd love a 32fter but yearly costs / wintering deter. Its all a compromise one way or another

With just one gas burner aboard cooking for six would be a real challenge unless you got in a small camping stove to add to your facilities. I have managed to cook a hearty meal for three on my boat but no more than that so two shifts might cover it !
On a serious note, if you used a boom tent and two smaller ones slept on deck it could work. However if anyone needs an evening visit to the "heads" i think everyone on board is going to know about it !

Cheers Arfa. At the moment it is the single burner that comes with the boat, but we are going to change it for a double one (our normal camping one). We have just put down the deposit on a second hand Jeanneau Sun so fingers crossed we are in business! Bring on the summer! Very excited.
Thanks to all who have posted here, its been very useful and apologies we had to chose one boat, I know there are merits a plenty in the others.

Will keep praising the J2K, rear berths pass under the cockpit seats, with space behind for kit, this allows mini locker/chart table/cooker/sink set up between rear berths and forard v berths, Don
