Chips with everything

We've got 2 turbo-diesel cars in the family both of which have been re-chipped for more power/torque and, as it happens, better economy. The chip suppliers say that car manufacturers deliberately detune engines to cope with varying fuel quality around the world
So will the panel comment as to why there is'nt some electro-nerd out there offering to goose up our boat engines? In fact why is'nt there a whole boat engine tuning industry? Why not a nautical version of Max Power?

wanted to post a reply....but decided to wind my neck in.....you've answered your own question. there are they just hav'nt realised the market yet. also the majority of engines heve manually controlled perameters. if you take the electronic control systems, they can have their perameters altered by "chipping" but as a trade off against longevity....see posted anyway......could be a bad thing!

Babes with everything

Most cars have electronic control, so chippable, but most marine diesels are clunky mechanical, so not chippable. But agree your suggestion there should be a nautical Max Power magazine, though nothing to do with chips....

Surely reliabilitynis the key. Marine diesels are known to be most efficient at between say 75% - 90% max revs which is generally speaking far higher revs than most cars are used at. This plus lack of lectronic controls make it a problem for us. Can't cope quiteas well with breakdowns from even higher stressed engines, lots of people suggest that the highest volume engine manufacturer produces (and we all know who that is!) enough unreliability without adding extra stresses.

Crome flashing bits

I like the idea,

Chrome side exhausts, fire breath when we come off the plane.

Spoiler to keep the back (oh I mean front) down. They even could be adjustable like trim tabs.

Maybe even a big sticker with GTI or something. must be worth at least another 5 knots

And last but not least a HARRY MOSS 8 track!

Re: Crome flashing bits

You've just reminded me to transfer the furry dice from the car to the new boat....thanks.

Additionally....what about stickers : " My other boat's a ........" etc, vinyl roof, fluffy seat covers, lots of ill fitting fibreglass panels......

Because marine engines a unreliable enough as they are without trying to get a decent amount of power out of them.

A powerful, reliable marine engine (Oxymoron), my God, what will they think of next.

Agreed about electronically controlled engines. In the USA, apparently you can get parts to upgrade power output from mechanically controlled Detroit diesels for one. You would have thought some idiot would have tried it with Volvos by now

Upping the power

Mike IMHO these electric volvo's are already stressed up too much, think about the early 60 series engines 5.5 litres 192 hp, then 60b up to 235, then 60 c up to 255, then 61a 306, 62a 340, 63 a 318, last off 63p series 370, now these engines are all the same displacement by now I would say that this must be the limit unless VP know different, we can only sit back and wait!.

On the subject of cars I have 2 oil burners soon to be 3 audi 1.9tdi, new Ford Transit 90 hp td not very good compared to old van, new addition will be VW Golf tdi been chipped by present owner to at least 150 hp for a cost of only 600.00 2 years ago when new, I shall be giving the Audi on permanent loan to Mrs pjs, unless she gets it first!.
