Hi Has anyone got, or had experiences with these motors? I have had a quick look at them and they seem to be based around the Yamaha / Mariner 2 hp 2 strokes from early 80s onwards. These weren't bad little engines if they were looked after properly and i was wondering if these were the same.I know they are cheap chinese imports but if they are Yamaha based and designed and they may not be all bad after all and being 25/1 may not wear out either.
Would be interested if anyone has got one.
Thanks in anticipation. Steve

You should not be able to buy new 2 strokes in the EU now. Their import was banned back in 2006 or thereabouts. OK to buy one if it was imported before then and been hanging around. (You may be outside the EU in which case ignore the above)

25:1 sound more like seagull territory than Yamaha / Mariner

Want to point us in the direction of these outboards?

When these were built by Yamaha i know they used to run on 50/1 anyway more to the point i also thought 2 strokes were banned for sale, but have a look on flea bay there are dozen and dozens new for sale!!. Dont get me wrong i dont want one but was interested if anybody had any experiences with them

Parsun is one brand of Chinese made outboards available in the UK although all are 4 strokes not 2 strokes.

It is not actually correct to say that you should not be able to buy 2 strokes.

The emissions regulations that came into force a few years ago as part of the RCD effectively ruled out all the small two strokes for recreational use but Mercury/Mariner and Evinrude still offer large two strokes that comply with the emission regulations ( Optimax and eTec )

Existing stocks of small 2 strokes can still be legally sold.

Yes you are right. There are still some 2 Stroke technology that is available, such as E-Tec, but there is no way that these outboards are meeting the emissions regulations, especially at 25:1

I believe this to be true, have seen some ebay listings that have said the 2 stroke in question could ONLY be sold for commerical use.

Same way various other dubious items are sold for "educational", "off-road", or "medical" purposes when all concerned are well aware that their intended use is anything but. If a similar market has emerged for the lightweight and simple 2-stroke outboard then I'm all for it.

If anyone is using one of these Fleabay specials - how noisy are they?

They appear relatively cheap and lightweight - just what is needed for the tender if they weren't illegal - but are they? If you manage to "get one" is it actually illegal to use it for leisure?

Ripster - From what i can see they are "clone" yamaha 2 hp. If they are they will be light fairly quite and nippy and can use yamaha spare parts, hence thats why i would like to hear if anyone has one.

Excuse my cynicism, however to me a cheap (?) Chinese clone of an aged Yam engine, is likely to have all the durability and build quality of a chocolate teapot. All IMHO. They may actually be wonderful; happy to be proved wrong :D

If after a small 2 stroke motor I'd have thought seeking out a lightly used Tohatsu, (or Mariner, Mercury - all made by Tohatsu) that's a few years old would be a far better bet.

No 2 strokes are illegal - it's just that it's not cost effective to resolve the emissions control on the smaller ones - much cheaper to build a compliant small 4 stroke - with the economies of scale they are OK for a large engine to build in the emission controls.

If I recall correctly all and any two-strokes are banned from the Thames.

I think the Lockie is supposed to take you to one side and explain the error of your ways to you. :D

But that doesn't conform with the EU Directive, which does NOT apply to any engine made before 2007. It's an absolute disgrace if they are attempting to ban people from using vintage Seagulls or similar.

I haven't read the relevant regulation, but I'm fairly sure it's the selling (probably, strictly speaking, "placing onto the market") that's prohibited. You buying it is ok, as is using it.

I thought that all 2 stroke engines were banned for the exception of trimmers and chain saws, where the weight of 4 stroke engines was an issue.
I still see cheap 2 stroke generators in DIY sheds, Lidl etc.

What actually are the facts

Under Health & Safety Rules 2 Stroke Outboards of under 5 Hp Should be allowed. A new 4hp 4 stroke Outboard weighs 27 kilos, But a 4hp 2 stroke would only weigh 15 kilos. Not everybody who goes boating is a weightlifter. We should have a petition to allow smaller outboards to be re-introduced. After all most of the small 2 strokes are only used on tenders or dingys, perhaps filled once a season. Get real.
