At 8.30am I took this pic of Windermere. There is ice at the edge of the lake, not like when the marina freezes you understand, but at the edge of the open lake on a North facing shore.

If you notice on the lake level and to the right of the island that little blob. It's 2 blokes in a rowing boat - fishing. Are they barmy?

On driving to Tighnabruaich on Boxing Day Loch Fyne was frozen from St Catherines over to Inverary and up to the head of the Loch.

It were cold!

Minus 11 earlier in Aviemore........not so warm here at Troon, the sea at the very edge of the beach is partially frozen.

Rather that though than the wind and rain that is forecast in the next day or so.

A warm coat, thick trousers, fur boots and a wooden box containing ... Poachers short rod and line, Bottle of Vodka and packet of Cig's ........ a machete style knife with long handle, a 1.5m ice screw to drill a wide hole through the ice ......

View from my bedroon window late last winter .... It is common once the river freezes at back of us - the ice-fishing starts .... Sometimes more than 200 people are out there .....

They reckon that 4cms is enough to carry an average man of 80kgs - as long as he doesn't start jumping up and down !! Average ice thickness out there can reach 1.5 - 2m !!!
You have to be careful walking out there - as each hole freezes up again and may only have a weak skin for a day ... till real ice thickness returns .....

At end of winter it is common for some to be drifting on broken ice in Riga Bay and have to be rescued .....

Me ???? You have to be kidding ..... sitting out there in -20C and feet frozen ??? Local Supermarket has good fish without the frostbite.

Re: Chilly Morning..... Ice Fishing >

I like fishing .... my canal is very good for a few hours in the summer evenings .....

But this winter lark that these guys get up to ????? Week or so ago - when ice was more slush than solid - guys were out handing their illegal Salmon net ..... which I am totally against ... But the boat had to be dragged through the ice forming - making their work VERY VERY difficult !!

I'm just biding my time - as Latvian Law now says I can claim control of river in line with with my section of bank out to mid-river point .... If I can get that - then I will stop guys Shooting (my wife had helped a family of ducks all last year and then we had to watch guns kill them as they were swimming round to our canal for daily "bread"), regularly we encounter nets across the river out from our canal making boating interesting if you don't take care .....

Shooting

Does the law apply only to access to your bit, so can they shoot from downstream of your area and wait for the bodies to drift down to them?

Re: Shooting

Dunno ..... only found the rule change by accident some weeks ago ... I was looking for an on-line Latvian Fish / Wild-life ID site .... one site came up with the Latvian Fisherys and Rivers Code etc.

Have to check .... but I would assume surely that if the duck is within my area it cannot be shot ? Seeing as the river is very deep and wide along the stretch from my house etc. - cannot see why Ducks would be outside my area ... mine having the reeds / habitat they like .....
