That would depend where he was doing the soundings. The actual channel seemed fine and I have no doubt that it may be deeper. My warning was specifically about the well used shortcut inside of west pole but after bar beacon which I'm certain is now very shallow. It may be helpful if a local could take a picture at low water which would easily show any high spots if they are there. Unfortunately I'm never there at low water and even more rarely now I'm out of the harbour :)

Have you left Emsworth?

Yes moved to Port Solent at the weekend. I'd been at Emsworth for 3 years so fancied a change and somewhere without a sill which was starting to get tedious having to be back at a certain time.

LustyD,

well I formed the idea by your description of the West Pole, and Brians' of the channel itself, that it may well be shallower - quite possibly in spots or humps - in places one has every right to be !

I for one will be taking it very gently in the entrance for a while until everyone has a better idea of what happened in the storms.

Ah then let me put your mind at rest a little, I had nearly 8m while in the channel so I think most will be safe there. Deep keepers should be careful though as I went through at exactly high tide of 5m!

So swapped a cill for a lock and the Sunsail mob then? You don't know the meaning of the word "tedious" yet!!!! :D

5m = MHWS (more or less). MLWS is about 4m less than that. So, you are saying that at MLWS there would still be nearly 4m in the channel. That is a whole load better than I am used to with Chichester. With my 2.1m draught I have always avoided entry/exit LW+/-2 hours, especially near springs. Sounds like I may not have to be quite so cautious if it stays that way. (I'll wait for the results of their next survey, though, before chancing it).

I have always gone to West Pole before turning towards the Bar Beacon and never been tempted to cut the corner, as I lack the "local knowledge".

Naturally I wasn't looking at the depth constantly so don't rely entirely on me! Thanks for the reminder of location, I hadn't thought of that
