Having been keeping a beady eye on the weather, and after some easy negotiation with Premier Marinas, we may be taking Cottontail (Galion 22) one step closer to Ramsgate. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Any pointers for the route between Chi Bar and Brighton Marina would be welcome, it is not unfamiliar water but you guys are so much more colourful than the amlanac! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The plan is to leave either late Wed afternoon (31st Jan) or early Thu morning, 5pm or 5am respectively. This should give us a little help from the conveyor effect, but with neaps (edit: that is to say not a full spring tidal flow) and light winds we may end up pottering.

What can we expect from Brighton, I have visited on work before and it always seems like there is lots going on?

Brighton is fine. Just remember that if your shoe laces come undone, do not bend over to do them up! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

carry on to Eastbourne

Sounds like a film. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sadly Eastbourne are not likely to honour my arrangement with Chichester, but they are a candidate for a stop off on the leg after this. For 'tis a cracking spot.

Norman-E and Aidy.
OK maybe I can't take a joke.
Maybe I'm premenstrual or something.

But I GET BORED TO TEARS AND MORE THAN A BIT ANGRY with the same old same old pathetic comments about Brighton.

AARRGGHH GROW UP!

So sorry, don't know what came over me, rant over!
Malthouse, I'll try and give constructive comments when I've done my deep breathing exercises /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Erm - Neaps?
We're hauling out on Friday ... 11:30 hi tide in Chi harbour ... the only time we can get to the crane during a SPRING tide!!
Granted - it isn't a huge spring tide ... but (from memory) 4.7m in Chi harbour is still good!!

Does this help?

Crickey, its as bad as bringing up the topic of anchors! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I have amended my original post to qualify.

the main thing I remember of my run from Langstone to Brighton ... the number of drift lines and pots was just amazing ... there was no way a direct line could be taken point to point - spent loads of time and fuel dodging the bl**dy things .... took 2 of us on constant look-out to keep from getting caught up.

A good run if no nets / pots ...

That is a point against leaving Wed evening then! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It may be different now - that was a few year ago and also in spring / early summer ...

I'd agree with sbc- there is no way you can steer any sort of planned course from almost inbetween Street and Boulder bouys ( I saw the dolphin there 4 times BTW!)through to Brighton because of pots and lines etc; I would highly recommend a daylight trip.
Watch out going past Shoreham- suprisingly large ships pop out of there from time to time.
It can get a bit interesting/swelly just before and in the entrance to Brighton- be assertive, give yourself a good southeastish-north run up to it and keep fairly close to the wall on port, rather than to the starboard bouy.

The marina restaurants are coming along nicely, but the shops are poo- bus along to town (or see if the tuc-tucs are still running)

If your'e still there in the summer, when I'm getting my boat home, I'll see you there..

Went through there yesterday and the dahns/buffs/cans are there in force - pay particular attention around the Looe channel or the Owers area depending on how far south you re going, off Selsey and Bognor (lots of short ones here), and all the way down to and beyond Brighton. Stay offshore a little and you ll find less.

Once you get into the marina at Brighton, I would resist a temp visitors berth on the western end of 8, 9 or 10 if you've got any choice - construction work has already started around the southern end of the west quay and there are reports of boats moored in the immediate vicinity having problems with metal dust being blown over from the building work.

Plenty of restaurants in the marina, although nothing spectacularly good. PM if you want recommendations. There's frequent bus services into town (bus stop is next to McDonalds) - no 7 bus runs 24 hours. Cabs can be hard to find in the marina and if you book one they often get nicked by some other punter. Having a coffee on the terrace of the Seattle hotel is a civilised thing to do on a dry day.

Cheers
Jimmy

Do be very careful with Brighton entrance if there's any sort of sea running in from the south-east. It can be very rough, though the forecast looks benign. I'd also agree about trying to get a berth in the eastern arm of the marina - much quieter.

ps, be careful about the depths in the southern part of Brighton marina too. More than one grounding there last year! In fairness, this is down to the local authority, I hear, who approved building of the new marina but won't approve enough dredging to keep it open properly, though I must say that there's no sign of the marina owners challenging this position by formal means.
