CHICHESTER SPEED LIMITS - OOPS!

Harbour limit is line from Eastoke Bn to West Wittering church spire. Inside Harbour speed limit is 8 knots thro the water.

Off the Wittering shore limit is 8 knots 600 metres to seaward of MHW line.

On the Hayling side speed limit is 10 knots out to 500 yds seaward of LW Springs - well beyond Bar Beacon and West Pole.

Off Langstone, at the Winner cardinal buoy enter the Port of Portsmouth where 10 knot limit applies out to 1000 yds from the shore,except Fishbourne Creek where only 5 knots.

When I questioned somebody (calls himself Fireball) on the narrow channels debate this is what he said:

Correction, that's NOT a Byelaw but one of the Guidance Notes accompanying the 1992 Conservancy Byelaws which are currently being revised and, according to the Harbourmaster, should be read in conjunction with Local Notices to Mariners.
You can add the Chichester Federation's Code of Conduct and Chichester District Council's Byelaws to the melting pot too.

Oh - and Cornishman - yes I am right. Boats under sail are not restricted to the 8 knot speed limit within Chichester Habour - otherwise I know the HM himself would be in breech of the rules when he's racing his Osprey.

Fireball is quite correct - it applies to boats under power. Sorry to say that the fastest sail I''ve had up the harbour yet was just touching 8.3 knots, must try harder!
