Me, 'im indoors & our lovely little Centaur have finally moved in to Chichester marina, & would be very grateful for some expert local knowledge, vis suggestions for the following:

a) someone to fix a marine toilet
b) best places to anchor/berth in the harbour
c) best pubs ditto.

Thank you, thank you /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

a) Dunno

b) Join the crowds at anchor at East Head, or anchor off Pilsey island which is quieter. I'm not sure what the etiquette is about borrowing an empty mooring buoy for a while, but we've found one in a quiet spot while we had a picnic before, and it was very pleasant.

c) The Ship at Itchenor is very good, the Crown and Anchor at Dell Quay is in a delightful spot, but the service can be very patchy depending on the level of frazzlement of the staff. It's a pleasant walk to either of them. The Black Horse on the A286 is a bit blah.

Food at the Spinnaker at the marina isn't bad. The food at the Cider House Restaurant just up the road is excellent. There's a curry house at the end of West Street by the Westgate roundabout, which is definitely acceptable. There's Nandos/KFC/McD's just as you get into Chichester if you like that sort of thing.

Went to Cider House on Friday night sat down at 8:40 pm after leaving the office in London at 5:50pm so very happy with that!

Food was excellent from start to finish not that cheap i.e not pub prices but not 2nd mortgage type thing either.

Agree with the other recommendations as well

[*]a) You, with advice from this forum.

[*]b) The popular anchorage at East Head off an excellent sandy beach has been mentioned as has the nearby anchorage to the east of Pilsey Island. That is also off a sandy beach but you are not allowed to venture above the HW mark as the Island is a bird sanctuary and there may also (they say) be unexploded "stuff" there. There is a little used anchorage on the south side of the Itchenor reach below all the moorings and there are visitors moorings at Itchenor each of which will accommodate several vessels. There is also a pontoon with visitors spaces a little above Itchenor. Anywhere in the Thorney Channel above or below the moorings is a peaceful place to anchor. In theory you are free to anchor anywhere out of the main channels and clear of the moorings.
I am not sure what's available in the Emsworth area but the Chichester harbour website has plenty of info
All moorings in the harbour are coded A to D according to the depth of water and 1 to 4 according to the size of vessel they can accommodate so it would be wise to familiarise your self with that code if you anticipate picking up a vacant mooring.

[*]c) The Ship and the Crown and Anchor have been mentioned but they are just run of the mill pubs as far as I am concerned. There are plenty to choose from in Emsworth and there are some nice pubs within a few minutes drive of Chichester Marina. [/list]

Oooh, now that really is an attractive option - although maybe not until I've got the loo fixed..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously, thanks for the recommendations - will definitely try the Cider House & Pilsey Island. Would agree that the Spinnaker is pretty good - we ordered steak for two there last weekend & got enough to feed a racing crew, & the chips are pretty kicking too.

Back to that loo - we don't need one fitted, it's just a minor repair, but our efforts so far have resulted in an evil smell & a small leak. We were hoping to find a reliable local 'man with a van' for odd-jobs - or is that one of those hopeless pursuits (like trying to find an NHS dentist)?

VicS - we crossed posts there, but thanks for some excellent suggestions. I'd be absolutely thrilled if you guys could help me fix that marine toilet without having to pay for it, but will have to check on which gaskets we tried to replace (ie I wasn't the one with my head down the loo.....). Back later.......

[/ QUOTE ] Make sure you tell us what type it is as well as what gaskets you've changed.

But when it comes to toilets fit a Lavac or ......... a Lavac.

Regarding Chichester. If you did not get one when you paid your harbour dues get a (free) copy of the "Chichester Harbour News & Guide" from the Harbour Office.

Re: Chichester - pubs & plumbers please!

I used the hammerhead pontoon in Emsworth the other week. 5 min walk into the town for supplies and good pubs.

It does dry out but with a bilge keeler it is not a problem if you get caught out.

Also Nutborne creek. Anchor at the top or pick up a mooring and row into Thornham Marina. 10 mins to Emsworth. Lord Raglan is closest.

[/ QUOTE ] You must like rowing then! Also access to Thornham marina is limited to about HW -2 to + 3hour. Better though at the dinghy chains by "the cuts".
Closest Pub is actually the Sussex Brewery.

Are you sure Thornham Marina is still there?

A night alongside the quay at Bosham could be good, there is a good little pub called the Anchor Bleu or the sailing club is good as well.

Thanks guys, that's great, very much looking forward to getting to know the area.

VicS - many thanks for your offer of help with the loo, but the other half tells me he's managed to download the Jabsco instruction manual & has worked out that he primed the wrong bit. I hope he knows what he's doing......

Re: Chichester - pubs & plumbers please!

Thornham Marine IS still there I was there this time yesterday....

Sussex Tavern AKA The Sausage Pub is excellent if eccentric, as is the Lord Raglan, and the Blue Bell, and the Coal Exchange.... Emsworth, last refuge of real pubs
