Firstly let me say this is not a rant - it is an observation.

Secondly I commend the Conservancy for enabling self service payment on line and the efficiencies that this delivers

Thirdly their auto-email received today gently reminding me of a payment shortly due

Dear Mr Clayton

Owner Reference: xxxxxx

Surname: Clayton

Outstanding Balance: £137.60

Easter is on its way and the weather is warming up. Help us get you ready in time for the 2013/14 season as your current Harbour Dues expire at the end of March.

As all dues are valid from 1 April and expire on 31 March then at this point in time I do not have an outstanding balance; I have a "due" to be paid by 31st March (cos La-la Land is in Chi Harbour)

As said, just an observation. I will do my usual - pop down to the Itchenor Office and have a nice chat with the friendly staff whilst I hand over my credit card

Yup me too first week of April when my balance will be due, take a nice drive to Itchenor a swift half in the ship collect my plaques.Job done for another year.

Bit confused for the reason for this thread sorry - your telling us you have had a reminder for next years harbour dues/outstanding balance  You must be a solicitor ;)

Outstanding Balance:
What makes your balance stand out from the crowd? I love it when they use that phrase.

My wife, the accountant in the family, puts it down to the fast track qualification route, I put it down to the poor teaching of English in schools.

I always find the harbour staff good to deal with, I just wish they knew that the harbour extends further than the stretch from Itchenor to the entrance when maintaining channel markers etc...

I have had no statement of harbour dues owed or outstanding balance from Chichester this year. Qualify for a free sticker now perhaps ???

Some years ago I was anchored in the back of beyond in the Turks n Caicos, up comes bloke in a dive boat for a chat.. Oy, your harbour sticker is out if date ses he.. YUp ex assistant HM Chichester now doing diving..

Just paid mine. I must say that the system allowing you to pay on line is a lot better than when I kept my boat in Poole. There is was either a 6 hour round trip in the car or bung a cheque in the post, which normally went astray.
I have also sent them an email asking for decent sailing weather this year, well they seem hell bent on being able to control everything else. Never seen so many Bylaws in such a small booklet!!

I have just renewed my harbour dues for Langstone Harbour (forty squids) which is a bit of a bugger as I hope to move to a mooring in Chi Harbour a bit later in the year. No refund offered for the 9 months that I won't be in Langstone and no discount from Chi for the 3 months that I won't be in their harbour!

BarryH,

years ago I sold my Anderson and she was left ashore for 4 years while I had another boat, then I bought her back.

We'd launched her in a hurry and I was just glad to get the boat back, niceties could wait...I went with a novice chum to Itchenor first off, chum was in the cockpit when an elderly Conservancy stalwart came out for his pound of flesh, according to chum he looked at the harbour dues plaque and gasped " thats...thats...thats 4 years out of date ! " Chum : " I honestly thought he was going to pass out ".

I have just renewed my harbour dues for Langstone Harbour

Some years ago I was told (by the Langstone Hbr office) that there was a reciprocal arrangement whereby Chichester boats could visit Langstone (for short visits such as a few days) and vice-versa. Does anyone know if this is still the case (if indeed it was ever official) ?

(I can't really imagine the Langstone HM searching out the occasional anchored visitor, but Chichester would certainly spot you on a sunny weekend at East Head!).

I have no idea what the score is nowadays but when we first sailed dinghies at Langstone Sailing Club - one has direct access to Langstone and Chichester Harbours - the two harbour dues were pretty interchangeable, and neither authority minded as long as we had a plaque from one of them.

Since then Langstone has stayed much the same while Chichester, as BarryH noted, now has more byelaws than some medium sized countries !

I was particularly aghast a few years ago when they - Chichester Conservancy - announced that if their patrol saw any sailboard out on the water without a current plaque they might seize the rig, or in the case of dinghies, seize the rudder.

I never heard of any time they were daft enough to try this, if someone tried to take my rudder I'd definitely go ' Jack Aubrey ' on them in a big way !

Vic, the reciprocal arrangement still stands but, regretfully not for boats moving from one harbour to the other but I did try though! :D
