Chichester Harbour - don't listen

I'm told that in Chichester harbour thare are boats that do not really require antifoul in some areas as the stuff in the water kills anything before it gets a chance to settle on a boat.

Isn't there a WWII wreck full of explosives in Chichester? (Under the mud and sewage)

Correct its the cocktail of TNT, radioactivity, mud and sewage overflows very, very unwise to visit Chi as mentioned before Poole's much nicer ! and they have a seahorse herd and they've draughted in a whale to patrol the coastline and entertain the visiting folks ! dont get that in Chichester ! (erm well not recently)

Not sure about explosives, but the bottom of Thorney Channel is layered in belts of aircraft .3 and .5 ammunitions c/o our air force. There is a crashed aircraft SW of Thorney Island in the mud but not sure when it came down so could be post war and harmless.

If your after explosives you would be better off with some of the wrecks on the IOW.

I concur that the place is full of speeding boats. If you look carefully at the picture you'll see two maniac canoeists. Look at the wash they're making. Unbelievable.

Kev B has photoshopped that picture. There is nowhere one tenth so pretty and sheltered and all around lovely as that within four miles of Chichester Harbour.

A low shot. Methinks, and very mean. To think of those cruising yachtsment venutring out of the Solent for the first time who may be duped into attempting to cross the killer of a sand bar (don't ask me where it is because it keeps moving) and into the trechorous race within the entrance in the hope of seeing this image that has been posted, only to find a green and brown pungent cess pit, shore to shore with jet skis, speeding ribs and the like.

I contrast to Kevb's picture....I have to confess that I have only sailed in a F8 in one place..... accross the bar exiting Chichester harbour. Chimet confirmed the data.
The wind was on the nose, wind over tide with just enough water over the bar with incoming spring tide. I had only a third of furled genoa out and my 16hp vetus twin was flat out as we tacked to and fro to get out.
I was relatively inexperienced but capable.... my crew was very experienced and extremely capable..
The waves were as high as an elephants eye and we did bottom out in one trough.
Years later with more knowledge and experience I probably wouldn't attempt it again in similar conditions and I definatly wouldn't attempt it in anything other than my Twister which really looked after us.
I heard that a life was lost one year when someone else attempted similar but I've not confirmed that.

Well it is a monster spring tide this weekend so who knows how the bar will behave ? I suspect that there will be a fair few boats making little headway at about 4pm trying to get into the harbour on Saturday....

Dont forget the machine gun touting people smugglers who frequent the spooky dark creeks of the harbour after dusk. The illegals are well camoflaged by the time they stumble upon the haunted paths, having waded through the brown sewage sludge and green slime.

And the columbian drug smugglers who drop off at Eleanor. If disturbed, they are liberal in the use of hand grenades.

Chi Harbour really is a war zone, and right under the nose of the military base.

And Another Thing...

Don't even get me started on the vicious rips tearing across the upper reaches of the Emsworth Channel!

Dont listen

Chi is a great place, the staff in the marina are great. the harbour patrol and master helped us find our lost cat which worked well, the locals are freindly, Itchenor is nice, good pub, and good visitors moorings (upto 2 week stay).

im used to Tamar, and i have to say Chi is lovely. The smell ok yes it does very occasionaly. Facilities are tops (especially compared to sparkes) - quite a few 'yotties' who are a bit up their own a$$, and the flybridge brigade who turn up at 8am every saturday/sunday morning to polish their plastic are a little loud (when you have a thick head)

Tide - well nothing more than other rivers, why sail if your going to winge about the tide, go find a lake i spose. I personally like having the tide, speeds things up a little, and when on good terms with the patrol, 10-12 knots in a yacht with tide behind is fine by them.

whats the problem? as a visitor i cant see any problems at all apart from some of the people that use it.

just my 2p :)

haha spot on. how dare they!

Dont talk such rubbish. its a terrible place-stay away all of you
Does that include me - I haven't sailed there for 40 years?

All this protestation makes me wonder if I'm wrong to write the area off just because they built a marina on my hockey pitch. (Well, we did play ice hockey there in '63, albeit with running jumps to get over the slush between the shore and the sea ice.)
