But is it OK to stay there more than say 2 hours ? In summer it requires a gatling gun to get near but may be OK now; snag with Itchenor is the Easterly has a long fetch right along it.

Indeed there are two. The midstream one you come across first past Emsworth south cardinal is all tide, whereas the pontoon further up past Fishermans PHM that is essentially a hammerhead attached to the millpond wall dries to a trickle.
 
In a direct Easterly you could look for an unused mooring up the Thorney channel, if depth allows. Nice and quiet compared to Itchenor and Emsworth. You said you did not need to go ashore.
 
thorney channel is fine for anchoring too - south or north of the moorings - it's not sheltered from the wind, but you don't get a fetch until HW and even then it's not bad...

edit: plenty of depth up thorney channel - never had an issue with a 6' keel ...

Yes, We've over night there many times. We often come out of the marina Friday and moor on the pontoon. If the harbour master is about, sometimes they want £5 for using it but I can only ever remember paying once.
 
Thanks all although I missed everything after this morning. Now moored on a buoy which definitely has an "A" in the name (Does "EC" stand for "Emsworth Council" when not an NMEA talker ID?). Wind has died down quite nicely and it was an incredible sunset. Oo don't that tide at the entrance run hard even quite late into the ebb? Well it does if you've got nearly a year's worth of crud on the bottom and a slightly underpowered engine.
 
EC stands for E for Emsworth and C for Conservancy (ie the Harbour Board) I believe. If it said EP it would be P for Private. Hope you are enjoying the best harbour on the south coast. As for the ebb, don't even think about it at half tide if there's an onshore breeze! :eek:
