Chi Harbour moorings

Hi. Does anyone have any knowledge/experience of the Conservancy A3 Nutbourne Channel and A3 Itchenor moorings in Chi harbour?
I am thinking the latter might be to bumpy from wash as it's a main channel and the Nutbourne mooring might be to shallow at springs as it's right up there of the way? the HM said all their A3 moorings are "Deep water" so i should not have a problem.

I have an A3 Itchenor, in the middle if the Reach. I like it because: My insurance covers it for 12 months of the year, so edge of season sailing is available and even winter possible. It is cheaper compared to some options for keeping a yacht. 24hr easy access, rather well sheltered in SW and west winds. Easy to pick up the mooring. On the prevailing wind you can almost sail from open sea right up to the mooring, where the last few miles are sheltered. Easy to drop the mooring and start sailing fairly soon. There is a water taxi in the summer 7 days a week. Negatives; You need a tender of course. The launching Hard is not that close to the more sheltered moorings. There is wash from passing vessels which does not effect me on the yacht but it does mean care and planning is needed with a dinky tender you might have. Also a snubber on the mooring top chain is very desirable. Don't have the top chain so short that the snatch load pulls the stem fitting down vertically.

A category "A" mooring simply means that the charted depth is more than 0.5 m. Look at the chart so see the actual charted depth for the mooring you are offered. Up to about 1.2 m at the southern end ITYWF but I guess any vacancies will be at the other end

The trouble with the Nutborne moorings is poor access from the shore. I assume there is still an arrangement with Thornham marine for dinghy storage and car parking but the time you can get away in the dinghy is very limited. Its also quite a long way from Thornham to Nutborne a decent dinghy with an outboard is essential.

I believe there is such an arrangement in place from what I heard. I can ask for you tomorrow and let you know. The getaway time for a dinghy is going to be around 1.5 h either side of tide, first time out I did come in 2h10m after tide but was well shallow and muddy and had to drag for the last 3 or 4 m on mud. just a bit, it's shingles under on the tender launch ramp. It's a happy place being a big plus and the WC showers are top notch, (Insert happily surprised here).It's being dredged at the moment as well.

The Conservancy website in fact confirms the arrangement with Thornham Marine and the details of access times are on there too. I should have looked before posting, not after. The dredging should help a bit.

We are there too and would agree with all this.
 
Just the kind of good advise I was hoping for thanks guys. The Nutbourne Channel is showing as 1.2 - 0.1 depth on my old chart which would be unsuitable. I can't see how the moorings officer can say it would be ok up there if it's that shallow?

He might be quite keen to get a customer there - not many of the moorings were taken last year!
 
So we took a trip over to Thornham Marina today and had a walk round to Prinstead. A Lovely setting and a very appealing place to keep a boat. If it were a very shallow boat. I was amazed at how fast and how far the tide leaves the dingy chains and as pointed out already the moorings are very exposed in all directions. a real shame. Thornham marina were very friendly and there is an agreement to use their facilities.
 
Thornham Point hard is a small hard a little way down from the Marina, muddy and not the best, but does give dinghy access from about HW -3 to HW +3.5, or +4 at a pinch. But zero facilties, and a longish walk from the marina Car park (CHC moorings holders can park at the Marina by arrangement for a nominal charge). But as suggested above its still a long way out to Nutboyrne channel and needing a good dinghy and outboard - and its a long way to lug an outboard from the car! I've used it for many years as I have a Prinstead channel mooring. Also there is a lot of loose rubble at the S end of the chains which is a real prop smasher!
 
Ok so thanks everyone, I have noted all the advise and decided the Nutbourne mooring is not for me and having spoken to the moorings officer Ed I have been offered a mooring up at Itchenor. Are the any mooring locations at Itchenor that perhaps are not so good to be on or should I just consider my self lucky to be in such a nice location and go for it?
