Cheverolet 5.7v8 diesel MARINE?? on a bravo ll ?

That un-used alternator bracket (LH front in picture), combined with the pipework makes it look like a 5.7 .... which have been aftermarket turbocharged, would make me very un-comfortable..

If not run hard she may last a lifetime, but then again based upon the reputation of the 5.7 L GM diesel, there is never a guarantee that this will be trouble free...

Yes I was thinking someone might ave just turbo'd a 5.7, the owner said the previous owner went to france etc with it so it's been opened up a fair few times I expect!!
the mystery is where the coolant is leaking to! I suspect it might not be the heat exchanger and is probably leaking into the exhaust through the head gasket but not into the oil, it hasn't seized though luckily,, having looked on ebay I can't find any parts at all for the 5.7 loads for the 6.2 and 6.5, its got a samurai sticker on which is confusing as I didn't think they did the 5.7 and the engine has glow plugs if that helps identify it as I know some 70's diesels didn't have glowplugs (like my jcb!)

here is a 6.5 CC-222-224-1200.jpg and this looks the closest! are there any numbers anywhere so i can know for sure! also the 5.7 has the starter on the rh side and the 6.2 and 6.5 have it on the left (looking from the front), and he said he did the starter down the left, god knows what he ordered as surely the 5,7 one wouldn't have fitted!! if its a 6.5 like in the pic I might take the risk and buy this old thing if the price is right!
can anyone tell me which pipes are fresh and raw on the exchanger (I know the black one is fresh!)cleopatra-express-fisherman-27516110131553655566566957514568x.jpg

To me, the cooling looks inadequate. Mine had a much bigger heat exchanger, an oil cooler and proper exhaust manifolds both sides with water injection points both sides. Mine was also non turbo. I can't find the old pictures of mine but will keep looking.

From what I can see, both exhausts come up to the turbo then out through a single pipe where 2 water injection pipes enter at the same point. Could the engine have cooked hence the head gasket has gone? In all honesty, it looks pretty Heath Robinson even by conversion standards. What's your budget? What are you looking for in a boat? The forum can produce a list of boats for sale in a matter of minutes

Please take my comments in the positive manor intended. Having been down this road, there is nothing worse than trying to make something work that was never intended for that application. If you are happy to rip out and start again, fair enough but I doubt you will see half the money needed back again.

Yes it does look heath robinson! the heat exchanger is a seacamp, although it all looks a mess it did work as the previous owner went to some exotic places! I'm looking for a cheap boat to tinker with and stay on, occasionally go out on but hopefully sell on for a profit, I can do most repairs so if this is the 6+l engine I might be able to tidy it and save it, I don't really want to re engine as its a pain lifting etc not to mention the cost!! I have had a load of boats before, the last big one was a fairline carrera wth the 2 aq151's in, but i don't like petrol inboards, just a personal thing and I know others disagree! having aid that i do have a pending offer on a bayliner 2556 with a 5.7gxi that also has a problem! it will rev ok in neutral but not under load, he has had loads done to it like service and fuelpumps etc etc and cant fix it so that's another one I'm gambling on if he takes my offer! I have taken risks in the past and most pay off, this site and google has saved my ass a fair few times! I prefer the bayliner but it's more money and petrol, (if he takes my 5500 offer tomorrow) this cleo is 4k and I rekon I could get a bit off that! so cheap and if i can get the engine sorted it is always easier to sell a diesel, I think I need to look into a cooling upgrade, the exhausts do have a pipe going in each end but i cant work out if its fresh or raw from the pictures, it looks to be raw as going into exhaust after but i dont know if there is a raw output further down I dont remember,
I suppose with a turbo the exhausts need to meet for the turbo to work on both banks hence the y bit, but I could possibly put 2 exhausts in and remove the turbo? the owner was a very honest old boy and he used it alot before it got hot, the only problem he ever had was the starter, he said she's pumping water well as I thought there might be a blockage, he thinks the problem is the heat exchanger, and he could be right! but if he is wrong then it's heads off time!! I'm kind of intrigued and really want to get stuck in!! but I would rather not have to take heads off as old bolts sheer etc I'm just trying to work out the coolant flow and which pipes are fresh and salt, so any help would be great,
I would love to see a picture of yours for comparison

All understood.

Raw water should go intake, seawater pump, coolers then out to exhaust and exit to sea. Fresh will be everywhere else obviously. I can't figure out the pipe from the left side to the exhaust. It looks like it comes out the block but that can't be. Probably some pipe work or an oil cooler that side?

In any event, I wish you the very best in your search and look forward to a future rebuild thread!

the pipe on the left is coming from the manifold, it goes from manifold to exhaust but the front pipe on manifold looks to be coming from the fresh side as it comes from behind the top hose where the clear pipe goes in from the heat exchanger! it's all a bit unlike the volvos and beta's etc i've worked on! but at least it looks like the manifolds are water cooled of some sort! was hoping it would be fresh cooled to stop the salt
thanks for all the help

See pictures in this eBay listing, it's advertised as 5.7 v8 diesel

Well Update time!! I bought the boat and did a load of research, joined an american tuck engine forum and its either a 6.2 or 6.5 according to them, the one in the sealine is a 5.7 which looks lovely, I have heard bad stories of all! I asked a passing marine engineer and he said my exchanger looked too big!!! having said that i'd rather have a big one! I took the pipes off the heat exchanger and put some water in the top. and it came out of the raw side!! so I now know the HE is faulty. i have taken it home and started cleaning it and filled it with vinegar over night to see if i can see any cracks etc, there is no strainer on the raw either i goes leg, oil cooler, pump, H-E, exhaust manifolds(which are BARR) then exit, I expect my oil cooler is pretty clogged b now with no strainer, my next mission is to rig some kind of fresh water tank to the closed side instead of the H-E to flush it all through and get the salt out, I have got some radiator flush stuff which i intend to circulate until the water gets hot then let it cool and then run again, but does the engine water pump rely on being gravity fed? or can i put a large bucket in the bilge with the pipe from the water pump going into it and then the top hose back in to circulate till it gets warm? I will put the raw pipe straight to the t that feeds the manifolds to keep them cool, its a shame i cant make the oil cooler fresh cooled but I wouldn't know where to plumb it in on this,, so it's a project but I am enjoying the tinkering! any ideas for a flushing tank???

Hi All
Well I have Finally found out that my engine is a 599 block which is apparantly the most wanted block by the americans who can upgrade them etc, I have taken the heat exchanger off and am now trying to find someone who can fix it for me which has been a bit of a challenge, Hopefully my friend at Taylor engineering might be able to do it,
I started the engine briefly yesterday just to see if she goes, and after remembering the glow plugs I got her going, just briefly though as the heat exchanger is off, but it sounded great and I am really looking forward to getting the heat exchanger back on so I can run her properly,
I have done a load of other work, mainly strengthening up the floor in the cockpit as some plank had just put ply over the floor which had gone soft! I found 2 massive hatches and the fuel tank under the floor, I strengthened it all from below and now I have my hatches in use for a massive amount of storage!! the big ugly heavy engine cover had to go too and I will be replacing it with a seat across the stern like it would have been origionally,
I am also seriously contemplating converting the living space back to the international spec, I'm sure whoever chopped the roof and raised the floor did it for a reason, but to me it ruined a really good design of boat and just made it an open top day boat!
I need a raw water strainer with 32mm fittings if anyone has one?
thanks for all the help guys,
Richie

Phew! the heat exchanger had a leak in the bottom, and the bottom hose does not seem to fit that well but with a bit of a tinker I have managed to run her for a while and luckily there are no head gasket issues, she actually runs lovely, a bit noisy and course sounding on tick over but what a machine!!
I've decided after attempting to sleep on the boat that 2 births and a family of 4 doesn't fit so I am going back to the idea of a bayliner type boat because we just want a floating caravan really,
so the boat is up for sale and hopefully I will get my money back and maybe a bit extra because it's now a running boat,
it still needs a good service and ideally some new pipes etc but hopefully she will attract a buyer who can do this and can see the positives
thanks for the help guys,
bravo legs are fine on these big v8's the americanes do it all the time,
I'm pleased I took the gamble and glad the engine is ok and it was only the heat exchanger.
I'm still going to advise the buyer to get a new one to be safe
if anyone wants to swap for a smaller easy to handle day boat or a smaller boat with more berths then let me know
Thanks all

Up for sale in 10 days, that's some kind of record surely :) Hope it sells and you get something more suitable for you. Bit of a clean up does wonders.

where is this list of boats you mention, I have now sold the boat as it was not suitable for us it was a bit of an inbetweener, as in it was too big for easy day use but only had 2 berths so could not be used for us to stay on, so sadly it didn't work out for us as a family boat although it was a really lovely old thing and I will miss her,
if you could get me this list I can see what there is within our budget,
thanks
