Have looked at a V40 1999 recently. Lovely boat and condition except for the cherry wood panels in the saloon and cabins where most of the cupboard doors and flat surfaces have a split.

I presume this is the veneer splitting.

Has anyone had any experience of this?
Is it common?
Cause? Too much or too little dehumidifying?
Rectification?

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

There is at least one company on Ebay that sells veneered sheets and iron-on glue sheeting (the same as iron-on edging) which would make it easy to strip off the old veneer and reaplce with new. Once sealed with a high quality varnish there should be no further problems.

Re-veneering V40

I have had a Fairline Targa 31 re-veneered and it's a big job! Don't underestimate the time involved to strip any panels, re-veneer than re-fit. If you do one panel you'll likely need to do everything else as the colours won't match and on a boat of that value any mismatch will be picked up. You will struggle to get a factory finish to match either. It took about 80 man hours to do this job and cost a small fortune so beware.

Thanks for the input.

Crazy - Yes I feared that this would be a big job. I don`t think I want all the hassle of this. Might be better to find a boat without these problems (unless this is a common problem!)

Re-Veneer

I've not heard of this before and I had a 1999 V40 4 years ago and that had perfect woodwork. Unlikely to be a common issue for the likes of Princess IMHO.... Lovely boats so well worth tracking down a good one as plenty were made so normally a reasonable choice on the market.

Sorry cant help but glad you posted as I also looked at one a couple of weeks ago. The same problem, a fine crack down the centre of each door. (maybe the same boat)

I wondered if the push latches were too strong and the panels too thin and over time the doors flex as the button is pressed to pop them open. The problem was only in line with the latch so I dont think its down to dehumidifyers.

Its a shame as they seem great boats. I hope its not common.

Cheers

This was a problem on the V39 and a few early V40's. The Company covered repairs up to 5 years old as it was a glue failure. If you are looking at a V40 with an issue I guess the owner never complained. It is a big job and is expensive to retrofit.

Steer clear of an early boat not sorted.

Paul

well, steer clear or get the professional repair cost off the price. There can't be that many doors on a V40?

There`s quite a few!
Surprisingly, the main doors were ok. It was the cupboard and locker doors that were in trouble and the flat surfaces in the main fwd cabin.
