cherish your harbour master - a rant!

You must like it though because you keep chipping in - you're the 4th highest contributor to this thread. :encouragement: And you clearly haven't ventured into the lounge yet...

Oh I was dead interested in the original subject. Being "new" to yachting it was an aspect I hadn't come across yet so I obviously wanted to find out what the score was. It prompted me to do a whole lot of digging for which I am very grateful.

I'm on here for nautical matters, my understanding is the lounge is everything else?

You should dip your toe in though, if only for the amusement of others.

Go on, I dare you to start a thread in there.... ;)

Being new on here I haven't quite got my head round you two yet. I do find your bickering mildly annoying when I'm actually trying to follow a topic, but I guess once I've learnt to ignore it I'll be OK.

More than mildly annoying in my book - I took some clients out for lunch today, for some stupid reason took a look at this thread, almost burst out laughing and then had to explain the whole stupid thing to a Middle Eastern bunch, who in turn proceeded to read the thread and (thankfully) find it equally funny ;)

Edit: Don't worry too much about these two; once the days start to lengthen, there's a bit of warmth in the midday sun and the final coat of antifoul is on everything will return to normal ...until Dec 2015 :)

A good thread about the barstewards at Falmouth Haven and their business and charging practices has been hijacked and descended into a complete bloody waste of time.

Getting back on subject then, and popping up to the other end of the country, here's the wonderful protected natural harbour at the bottom of my garden. It's formed by a chain of barrier islands across a deep water inlet with a narrow sheltered entrance. I was out sunbathing today in the garden admiring the splendiferous view (although I had to weigh down the deck chair with a boulder to keep it within the same county while I took the picture).

It's used full time by 3 creel boats and 2 fish farm tenders. It cost nothing to build as it's natural. The facilities are a tatty jetty, slipway, tap, carpark and a solitary bin (never knowingly lobbed anywhere - house prices safe). There is no resident harbour master, it comes under the jurisdiction of Lochinver 14 miles away. Anchoring is free but use of the jetty or slipway is meant to be paid for by an honesty system, but I doubt anyone ever does. Despite the probably near zero income from users the council had to spend £30k a few years back to make the jetty safe as its end was collapsing. This kind of harbour must be just a financial dead weight to councils.

In summer a few visiting yachts make it here and some kayaks launch from the slipway, but as there are no shore-side businesses, that doesn't help the local economy.

Annoying though it is, I can see both sides of the argument for the need of charging for anchoring within harbours. Hopefully, like vandalism, anchoring charges will never come to places like this.

He took some pictures of a Harrier once so he could probably figure it out easily enough.

Well he seems happy enough to take half this forum on all on his own - and stand his ground to boot! So I for one reckon he's got some decent vintage RAF blood running through his veins.

Angus, that is a drop dead gorgeous view you have there, even at this time of year! It even makes a softy southerner like me jealous.

ps: good to see you even managed to capture a proper sailing yacht in it.....:)

Right I'm back, where was I...;)

I see we have some superior beings join us and I do like your little story about your Middle Easten bunch, Dom, sounds like they at least have a sense of humour :encouragement:

Comment I loved best was, "OMG these are the guys that play cricket on the Brambles Bank!" ...mind you'll have to do a bit of dredging to get these boys toys into the new "Newport Marina" ;)

L'escargot could umpire while standing on the side-decks of an A22.

Surprised Seajet has not corrected you here, although he probably did not know.
An Anderson 22 does not have a side deck as such, there is just a bit of plastic about 80mm wide
If you wanted to double the boats value you added a guard rail & standing on the side deck would be pretty dodgy affair
But standing on the deck is not much better as it is like a bendy ski slope
Quirky little toys really!!!

Oh, Please Sir, Sir? Me Sir?

Just because I'm bored, I have no real interest other than this is fun to watch.... ;)

9 years ago. And the recommendation - to note the report. Note even to let a community police thingy walk down or add a camera. Agreed it is one more reference but still hardly a hotbed of crime.

If you look at the crime map on police.uk there seems to be an average of 2 or 3 crimes a month in the area (all crimes). Less than hamble for example.

Oh, I know that, I was just splitting hairs for the fun of it....

None at all, when it comes to the artificial features of a harbour. You can carry on, preserve, support, sustain, keep up, keep supplied, affirm, support by argument or defend Poole Town Quay till you're blue in the face as far as I am concerned. I am less convinced that human interference is necessary in every natural harbour. The ones I use on the West Coast seem to cope fine without harbour commissioners charging me a tenner a night for their braid.

But they are nothing like Poole - either in the past or now. Always a problem when comparing apples and oranges.
