All commercial ports are scruffy to my eyes. Dieppe has greatly improved since we first went there in 1978, when we stayed in the fish dock surrounded by muck, dead fish & cats etc. The train for the ferry no longer runs sadly. It’s seven or eight years since I went there but the marina is ok, but the surroundings are characterful rather than chic, unlike Port Guillaume in Dives which is smart but less exciting, though the town itself is lovely.
The train station in Dieppe is less than 2 Km walk around the dock to the modern ferry terminal
Dieppe is nothing like it was in 1978. Things in France have moved on somewhat since then. Dieppe now caters much more for the tourist trade.

I agree with littlesister - Le Havre is an easy entrance to a good marina .. Honfleur is a port to avoid imho. Rude people and tourist trap prices. Dieppe good. Fecamp rolly. Pretty much everything else tidal.

Cherbourg - Le Havre - Boulogne is our route from there.
