Cherbourg on a Sunday

We're popping over to Cherbourg this weekend, weather permitting, and plan to have the day in the town on Sunday. There's a wealth of info on-line about restaurants etc, but very few of the online entries give details of their opening hours.

Anyone have any suggestions for good eateries max 15 - 20 mins walk from Port Chantereyne that is definitely open on a Sunday and can be recommended? Preferably one that does more than just seafood as a speciality.

Most places in Cherbourg are less than 20 mins from marina; most will be open for Sunday lunch, though it might be best to phone first as they will be busy!

Le Grandgousier

Grandgousier - Now gone. We ate there a few years ago, went looking for it a few weeks ago and no sign of it.

Le Faitout - They had a sign saying they were closed for a couple of days for something special, can't remember the dates, think it was in June, so should be OK.

There is also Le Aubin, which is fairly upmarket and open Sunday lunchtime.

If you want something simple, there is a cafe next to Le Aubin which looks basic, but the food is quite good, big pizzas and moules & frites. You can sit inside or out, but it is in the shade on the quayside road, so better inside unless hot.

We ate at the Yacht Club at Chantereyne the Sunday two weeks ago. It was reasonably priced and the food was pleasant but not exceptional.

L'Aigue Marine on the quay towards the bridge and La Regence a bit farther up. L'Aigue Marine may be close lunchtime Sundays but I think they open in the evenings. La Regence is a hotel restaurant so always open. Cafe De Paris (same area) may be closed Sundays, not sure.

If you re looking for something to please the kids Cherbourg has the best Pizza restaurant on earth.

It's a 10/15 minute brisk walk from the Marina opposite the inner harbour - you can't miss it it had a dark green and red awning and is run by the thinnest, busiest Madame you ever saw.

The pizzas are amazing - wafer thin and loads of topping.

The three course menus are terriffic value ( 6 of us once ate there about 4 years ago and the bill was £66.00 with two litres of rose to wash it all down with

Having said all that we have not been for two years and would love to know if it is still there
