Trying to get out of our boating rut that we seem to be stuck in and thought that a year moored in Cherbourg might be a nice idea (easy ferry access etc)

I have e mailed them three times now via their web page regarding a place but have had no reply

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has berthed there who can fill me in on the good and bad bits and also if anyone else was thinking of berthing there and had actually got a reply from the Capitanierie:confused:

Of course, I would also welcome ideas of where else in France would be suitable for out Trader 44 (think cheap and easy access:D)

no answer to emails is about par for the course - you may have to just turn up.
Never used it as a long term base, but always enjoyed visits there. nice to have a whole city within walking distance of the marina.

Try e-mailing direct. Our YC contact is Sandrine Bandrac sandrine.bandrac@ville-cherbourg.fr and she is usually very helpful.

I like Cherbourg. We've called in a few times now, usually on route to the channel islands. It's nice and easy to get in and there has always been a berth available on spec.

Our favourite restaurant is Le Vauban located on the Quai de Caligny. The last time we were there we had planned to go to Guernsey but the weather turned so we stopped over and had a great day walking round the submarine museum. Once the weather improved we headed East and had a few wonderful days in Saint Vaast.

Definitely give Cherbourg a go. Nice and easy and so much more than just a ferry port.

Henry :)

Carentan is an option for long term.

Guernsey winter berthing or Beaucette Marina year round?

Beaucette would be my husbands ideal but I did say in my original post "cheap and easy access"

I am usually to be found on my knees praying as we approach:o

That's an interesting question. I had thought about arranging a berth at Cherbourg over the summer and using it as a base for shortish trips - stay one night and then back to base, sort of thing - then back to UK and repeat a couple of weeks later. In the end I did other things this year; but next year, who knows?
