They've a better deal on yard service this year, they're taking the "add value" rather than "cut prices" approach to the credit crunch.

They've just sent me a cheque for services i had last (financial) year which I presume brings me to the same level of discount as on offer this year. An unexpected £168. Nice one.
 
They put my credit against my oddly high electric bill..... Not often you get anything out of MDL.... but still wondering how a 6amp 4 step intelligent battery charger and a 100watt tube heater costs £70 a 1/4 /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
We are with MDL on the thames and was very suprised by our recent electricity bill. Having spoken to a few other berth holders, a lot of them are not happy by what seems a sudden increase in electricity bills, a few have spoken about moving on as a result next season

same here.. but the odd thing is I have the same equipment on all the time, the only difference is obviously how much i use the boat but with only a tiny boat I don't have a TV, I do have a small fridge and a fan heater when its really cold.... But last year the first bill I had I think was £34. The second £47, and the third was £70. Now the third bill was over lay up, so boat was out the water and apart from an orbital sander for probably 2 hours and a polisher for around the same time that was the only additional electrics used... I have a friend with a bayliner 285 at at Penton Hook and he has an in built battery charger and the same size heater tube as me, his bill was £83.... I am on a meter, I have checked the readings and they seem right..... So now I have done what all good Englishmen do and pretended it didn't happen & hid the bill from SWMBO. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
 
Me too thought my MDL electric bill was too high, but we did have a colder winter.

By the way I would be careful about using a fan heater left on your boat, if the fan fails you risk an overheat and a possible fire - best to use oil filled heaters to be safe.

Oh the Fan heater is just for SWMBO while we are on board!!!
I would never leave such a fire hazard aboard and plugged in unattended, especially with 140 liters of unleaded under the cockpit /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Hence the greenhouse tube heater...
 
James... An issue close to my heart (unfortunately).

I bill my clients monthly for power units (KWH) consumed. Apparently our marina is one of the few that use meters (locally), I can't see how you could accurately determine the consumption without them.

Everybody complains because of the high unit cost, but when looked at from another perspective it isn't so sinister.

The meters were installed to ensure a user pays principle, at a cost of $50,000.00 (5 years ago). Everybody expects a modern marina to have all the facilities.

Our buy price for the power is at a commercial rate, which is nearly twice the residential unit cost.
There is no supply charge (as there is at home) for meters.

All new clients are advised to plug in, read the meter, and run their normal systems for 24 hours, read the meter again. Then times the amount of units used by 30 (1 month), then times the unit cost. And there is your monthly bill! No surprises.

There have been cases (residential) in this country where the provider has 'guesstimated' the power usage, based on previous records. An appalling thought.

Of course the big consumers are fan heaters, air conditioners and refrigeration.

Callum, please understand our English prerogative to complain about things we don't really understand. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Seriously reading your post here, and on the other post are both interesting, and of course from the otherside so to speak. In any industry or service provider, people looking in will sometimes see companies who charge whooping prices for some things and believe they are being over charged. In reality the companies making those charges are simply covering costs and adding a fair margin, with electricity in marina's this additional charge is obvioulsy not the marina's only income, its just a service offered to make the marina more usable & I am sure doesn't even cover the administration costs. But as we berth holders don't know, its just a mystery to complain about!
If we all new the facts about everything we wouldn't be able to winge! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
