Chellers out on Manoeuvres

Mr Chellers (James) has gone out for his first ever singlehanded sail on Chellers (and he never got round to one on our previous Bav34). I assisted him off our tricky mooring (in reverse) by randomly tugging on a few ropes here and there and off he went.

I think he's planning to head up the wallet and anchor somewhere in the Walton Backwaters. Plan B is to go into the Blackwater. The wind looked so light that it's likely he'd be motoring rather than sailing, unfortunately.

If anyone sees him, do say hello!

He should be returning tomorrow lunchtime, all going according to plan. I will be there to play 'catch the 4.5 ton boat and help squeeze it through the eye of a needle into our berth'.

Just had a text, James was passing Walton and had the spinnaker up. Rather complex for a first singlehanded sail!

Seems like he's picked a good couple of days for sailing in terms of sunshine, shame about the absence of wind.

He didn't actually specify whether it was the spinnaker that needs the pole or just the cruising chute. My money's on the latter /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Just heard from HWMBO anchored somewhere on the backwaters (apparently near where the Pirate's Weekend will be) that he started off with the cruising chute and then when the wind wasn't good enough he put up the proper spinnaker with the pole and all.

I saw the mighty vessel leaving Brightlingsea this afternoon as I was busy berthing a ship. Seems like a good day for it! Do the good people hereabouts know that the scrap business will be finishing at B'sea at the end of August. Thats a result, I would say.

Didn't know the scrapyard is finishing. That's good news, at least as far as our view from the boat goes (plus it's sometimes a bit noisy).

Mind you, what are they going to do there instead? Do you know?

I'd heard that the port was going to be used to assemble & ship out components to the new windfarm?

Anything would be better than another prison block.

What I'd really like is a whole load of new pontoons with a nice hammerhead in deep water so we can go sailing whenever we wish. Oh, and the same price for our year's berthing /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you look at the planning application on the council's website REF: FUL/BRI/08/00673 they want to put a slaughterhouse there so that they are not exporting live animals, along with a windrow composting facility for waste (whatever that is).

He's back. Had an amusing time waiting to come into the pontoon area as Morgan Marine were laying some new finger pontoons, one beside where Chellers lives, and the wretched thing had flipped upside down. They were fiddling about with lots of ropes trying to right it but to no avail. Eventually they had to tow it to their hoist, looking like Nessie (several lumps sticking out of the water). HWMBO then came back to the pontoon. Good thing we had walkie talkies!
