SWMBO named our current boat - part of the deal when she allowed me to buy it, seemed fair at the time.
Apparently a 'Whitelighter' is a white witches guardian angel, so I feel ok with it as it happens.
My Mum named our last family Moody 'Wychcraft' - Wych meaning salt in old english. Every marina we ever went into spelt it 'Witchcraft' though - ho hum.
SWMBOs seem to give a bit more thought to the name, and as others have said, will provide a bit of a connection to the boat which isnt a bad thing.
Definately apply the VHF test irrespective of who comes up with the name. Ask yourself - will I have to spell it out to HM Coastguard every time I contact them. I failed to apply this test to SWMBO's proposal and now all I can hope is that the coastguard get there act together and link their DSC radio to a PC so that they get an instant display of vessel name from the MMSI number.
No no no no. Picture SWMBO spelling it out phonetically to some aurally challenged marina berthing master. This rules out "Fleur de Bracondeux" or anything Gaelic or Welsh. Name it after your wife.
We are chagning Gainsborough Lady specifically because of the VHF test. It's a nightmare saying it three times without gabbling it.... and as for phonetic alphabet....
Our boat was called Pride of Valletta - not our choosing but too lazy/superstitious to change. Fortunately lived on the Thames so didn't need to worry about VHF.
