The Tobermory otter is getting too cheeky. On Saturday night there was a RIB on one of the pontoons with something I hadn't seen before- a small square tent towards the stern for the kids. The two girls were in the tent: parents, with dog, towards the front of the cabin, when the otter came into the cabin, ignoring everyone. It has also pinched food off the table from another boat, and regularly pinches fish off the fishing boats. Earlier on Saturday it had wandered to within eight feet from my wife, as she was standing on the slip, and hissed and growled when it noticed her. Tobermory visitors beware! And keep a camera handy.
 
Thread drift, italian ribs in Fiscardo, hundreds of em, all got material cuddies where they camp at night, apparantly a sight to see as they all swarm across for their hols.

There's also an otter at Kyleakin with the same modus operandi. I used to think they were little and cute.

[/ QUOTE ] They have sharp teeth and can inflict serious damage. I think one of the people working for Gavin Maxwell at his otter sanctuary lost a couple of fingers as a result of a skirmish. Enchanting creatures, but I'd keep my distance!

Fun to watch, what looks like a normal rib becomes floating tent.

I suppose a cheaper way of getting on the water for those with young families, they look after the boat, lots of polishing & cleaning & seem more polite people.


Better than those arm waving, shouting, Italian T****S who wreak havoc in mobo's.
 
There's also a ginger cat that's taken to jumping on board, dropping down the companionway and inspecting the saloon. What with that, the otter, and the wildlife in MGochan's, it's rapidly becoming a menagerie up there.
 
At least the cat is very friendly! Mind you, I've seen it chase a border collie off the car park. I wonder if it and the otter have met?
 
If the otter gets too cheeky, turn the hose on him, he'll scarper and get vthe message after a couple of times, they can get very nasty, be careful.
I love otters and wouldnt want to harm one, but they have to be kept in their place, they do have sharp teeth and claws and are not afraid to use them.
We had a couple just like that on Victoria island BC, they were fun to watch, but mischevious little devils.
 
Terry Nutkin was working for Gavin Maxwell with his otters when one unexpectedly turned on him and bit off two of his fingers. The behavior was very unpredictable and even reared otters that had been used to being handled became very dangerous.

Find a copy of Ring of Bright Water and have a read. Beautifully written book and a joy for anyone who likes the west of Scotland.

PS: I was in Tob on Fri evening and didn't notice the wee beastie. Is he a regular in the Mishnish?
