I try and do all jobs myself where possible. The only jobs done by the boatyard are such as mast lowering and raising, swinging mooring maintenance, antifouling(when I was ill), replacement of heads seacock(just before summer cruise & I was still working), replacement of cutless bearing(I could not remove it) and have been very pleased with all the work. Oh, and a small grp repair job last winter after another boat hit me whilst on my mooring, which they admitted to and paid for - excellent job.
If not familiar with a particular job, I research it and ask around.

Your making a fairly large assumption that every yard has the knowledge too......

I contend that very few if any yards can adequately cover all the bases given the huge range of boats that come along.
For example for gas systems, heating systems, gearboxes, aluminium and 316 welding we know a man that can and he'll be scheduled to come in.
Our electrician is with us twice a week and covers other yards the rest of the week.

We have a boat in now with a gearbox issue after just 200 hours.
So we removed it to send it away for testing and in the process we discover the shaft is what we consider to be badly aligned.
We advise the owner to contact the manufacturer who duly comes down a couple of days later.
The manufacturer say's there's nothing wrong with the alignment.
We point out to the owner that in our opinion the shaft, tube and gearbox are at least 12mm out of line.
The manufacturer says it's only a couple of thou out.
We now wait for the owner to decide which way to go.

The point being that there's plenty of times when those who should know can't agree.
