You would end up with grinding paste in the oil. Not good for the rest of your drive! The whole top end needs to come apart to allow it to be cleaned afterwards.
Get an engineer with good experience of Volvo drives to do it. It should take no more than about 6 hours to do this.

Did you get your cone problem fixed I have the same problem with a Volvo Penta.

Come clutch is worst case.
This is also often caused by cable adjustment or stretching.
Embarrassingly, it also happened to me years ago after I changed the gear oil in the first season using the Mercruiser quicksilver drive oil (was used to mercs). Oil got too warm and lost viscosity. Problem was solved by using the proper gl 5 75 or 80w-90 gear oil. That was on a 290dp.
It may also happen if you have water in the drive....might be likely.

I did have water in the oil .
Probably shift seal or level plug.

Thought so. You'll probably be just fine with fresh oil.
Some of those VP legs are famous for water ingress.
I took some advice on it years ago, believe it or not from a mercury dealer. He told me to forget the VP rubber oil drain o ring seals and use the Mercruiser fibre washers instead and then seal with silicone. Didn't have a problem in the years of ownership afterwards.

I'll have to change my routine and maybe get the oil changed each fall at the end of the lake where I'm taking the boat out instead of going 3 to 4 years without changing my oil and having more water in the oil then I should have .
That's probably encouraged my problem.

Yeah...you need to keep on top of that. Being honest i don't service the leg and engine until the new season....but before the winter comes in with freezing temps, I always crack open the leg drain plug to check for water, in case there is any in there to freeze. Haven't had it yet with the mercruisers, but the VP used to have water most years until I used the other seals and silicone seal
