Hello everybody, I've owned my 36 foot yacht for the past 18 years but now due to a career change I find I can't afford to pay for mooring fees next year. I don't want to have to sell her if I can help it as this is only a temporary situation. Can anyone advise me on super cheap options for berthing, storage, or lay up for a year or so? She is a 36' fin keel grp yacht (1.85m draught) currently in Beaulieu river although I can quite happily take her wherever is needed.

What does it cost at Beaulieu? £4k?
You might be able to reduce this significantly in Poole or Portsmouth harbours.

Moving her to a cheaper location is the obvious answer. You will get better answers to that question if you can give some idea of which direction would be better for you to travel. There are cheap swinging moorings in the Plymouth area where you can safely stay afloat all year but no point in giving details if you don't want to move the boat that far or in that direction.

Travel across the Solent to the Medina and see if you can find a way to be lifted out at Newport town Quay . Don't know if they can handle fin keelers as tends to be Westerly bilge keelers but worth ringing around a few places on the island or asking at places like Island harbour for example?

If it is just on shore storage then Ridge Wharf on the river Frome at the top of Poole Harbour is a good well priced location.

Thanks all. I'm currently paying 2800 so many of the options I've found are only a couple of hundred cheaper. If I can find somewhere with a substantial saving I don't mind moving her wherever.... I was kind of hoping for the nirvana of a little yard in Hull or somewhere that would store her for a grand!

Try Mariners Farm Boatyard in Gillingham, Kent. I believe rates last year for storage inc Vat under 70p per foot per week . Reasonable liftout price as well.

Had our boat there some years ago.

Access is tidal, check they can handle your draft.

Well even the Douglas Boatyard just off the River Ribble would still be a bit more than half your current amount.

I think you need to find a sailing club that do their own haling on a mutual self help basis. Try the East Belfast Yacht Club (http://eastbelfastyachtclub.yolasite.com/activities.php)

I agree with you Motor Sailor - my local sailing clubs work on a mutual self help basis and it's costing me just under £150 a year for a hard standing for my Maxi 1000 but I do have to pay extra for power. This is in Morecambe Bay.

The moorings at Cracknore Hard at top of Southampton water are the cheapest in the Solent I think. You might look at the Medina, some cheap moorings on the river.

Yarmouth Harbour out of season is cheap too.

+1 Fiddlers Ferry for cheapness, thought it was cheaper than 500. Harbour master Mike is a super bloke. Draft dependent though.

Cheap sailing clubs around though you would likely need your own cradle.

Only been up there in a bilge keeler myself but made the passage once following a 2.2m draft fin. You do need 10m at Liverpool, though, and a keen sense of time keeping. The trip can be less stressful if undertaken in two parts, anchoring overnight in the hole off Pickering's Pasture just downstream of the Jubilee Bridge.

EDIT: If for some strange reason you would prefer Portugal to Warrington then Povoa Varzim do a lift in & out plus 12 months ashore for about £1k for 10.5m.
