Hi All,

Currently living on board 15m Catamaran in Malta and looking for somewhere cheaper in Spain or Italy. Currently being charged for twice the fee instead of usual 1.5 times.

Thank you

In my experience which may be totally out of date cheapest marina I ever found was Ashkalon in Israel. However cost of living was the same at that time as UK and now you would have the issue of being within missile range from Gaza!

Try the one further north at Ashdod.

Worked in Israel in the early 2000's = great place.

Id second cartagena, people are reportedly getting good deals there plus its historical and pretty.. aguadulce/almerimar are cheap, not necessarily as pretty or historical ;)

cheapest i hear of lately is melilla, also interesting since its in morocco but not in morocco..

But once there, we can you go to? You can't go South - Gaza, to the North, Lebanon.

You need to go a long way out before turning left or right!!!
Was there in October, Tel Aviv, the first night, restaurant on the beach, me, swmbo. no1 daughter, mil. Rare steaks, good bottle of wine and Goldstar beer for me. Balmy breeze coming from the SW, warm, stars, magic, thought I was in heaven! People were friendly, wanted to chat, couldnt do enough for us. Service ethos of the USA. (Tip ethos too!)
Next day train to Haifa, full of national service kids with feckin big guns! Not like here either, banana clips taped together with full loads showing. Us old farts got on, train full, immediately the youngsters jump up and offer us seats. I said no at first, they insisted and I said "Do you realise what you are saying to me?" "Sit down you old fart!" The carriage collapsed in laughter.
It was like being in Florida, full of bright hopeful people looking to look after themselves, the darker side was the rerligous nuts who took delight in pi ssing the Arabs off!
Every society has them!

Castelsardo, north Sardinia, was the cheapest marina we stayed in anywhere in France, Spain and Italy. I have read that rates have increased somewhat since, but we paid €11 per night for 35 ft, height of summer, in 2006.

local marina rates - a Sticky idea

wouldn't it be a useful guide if we all posted our local marinas current berthing rates, wherever we are, and ask forum admin to set it up as a sticky?

I'm afraid that cheap/15m/catamaran is an oxymoron and we'd be misinforming you - I can bear out Castelsardo's and Monfalcone's relative cheapness, in the extortion that are Italian mooring charges. Mesologi has space and currently does not penalise catamarans. French, Italian and Spanish marinas will all be interdit if you're on a minimalist budget. The Med is expensive in season and your boat is uncomfortably large for many marinas.

I have heard from a reliable source that Sotogrande 20M east of Gibraltar in currently crying out for winter customers and that you can "negotiate" your rate there. Last winter the harbourmaster offered me a rate without the multihull surcharge, I was very tempted but Cartagena beckoned!

At the same time Alcaidesa La Linea which was 90% empty insisted on a 50% multihull surcharge!

I visited the new marina in Licata, Sicily yesterday where they said they were offering the same price to catamaran's as monohulls. Check out their website at www.marinadicaladesole.it. As it is a new marina, they are currently offering 20% off the listed prices. However, be aware that the marina is not fully completed yet. If you are in Malta, it may be a good idea to hop on the ferry and go over and see the marina for yourself. From what I saw, the boats that had been there over-winter had about 20cm of growth on the bottom of them though due to the local river that supplies high nutrients to the water.
