I need a new hand-held GPS, and thought I may as well splash out for a handheld plotter for cockpit navigation.
So the choice is
Garmin - garmin charts
Magellan - magellan charts
Lowrance - Navionics charts.

I'm desperately trying to work out which _Charts_ are cheapest - am I deluded, are they all the same ?
So far navgionics XL3 at about $240 seem the cheapest.

All advice appreciated

Cheers

Navionics are pretty good value...

You'll find that the Navionics XL3 charts are pretty good value. Look at the UK coverage on the Navionics website and you'll see that one XL3 chart covers the whole of the South Coast plus East Anglia, France, Belgium, Netherlands. All for £219.

Your handheld plotter choice is a bit wider than you indicated, Angus. Look also at the Raymarine RC400 or the Geonav 4C (same product), which use Navionics. The Geonav 4C is available from JG Technologies for £419 inc delivery, a DC charger and some NiMh batteries - and they'll discount Navionics charts by 10% if you order them with a plotter.

Re: Navionics are pretty good value...

Thanks for that, sure enough the xl3 provides much more coverage for the same price.

I like the look of the Raymarine, but I've read elsewhere that it's a bit delicate.

Anyway, Navionics it will be, thanks again.
