In order to make this YAPP:

where would be a good place to start looking for ais receivers? But then when J-link debugger costs over 200 euros, is it worth it?

Just looked like fun and something useful, but not if I can buy an off the shelf unit for similar money

Cheers

That project is just an AIS plotter, not an AIS receiver. The cheapest AIS receiver is the Nasa one. I ditched my old VHF, upgraded to a DSC one, and got one with an AIS engine built in. This saves a separate aerial installation.

You don't have to use a JTAG. For flashing no JTAG is required, it's only needed for debugging. And even then you don't have to use a J-Link. There are Chinese rip-offs of Segger's J-Link on EBay that I'm not posting a link to here but you can find them if you search. There is also the Coocox open source JTAG which various people legally make and sell on EBay, for example...

This will work with Coocox, the free ARM Cortex development environment.

thanks.
I have all the bits I need then (aerial and gps receiver).
Just £100 for an engine and the Yapp (looks really good)
Thanks

I'm trying to get AIS from an SDR dongle (~£10) on Raspberry Pi .. nearly there, but other priorities so aiming for next season.
