Having just paid a Yanmar agent £19.85 for a water pump impeller and £7.10 for a fuel filter (3MH35 engine) I wondered if anyone knows a cheaper source of supply? After all this engine was supplied for tractors, pumps etc. Thank you for any information.

For the once a year you replace them, does it really matter?

Genuine Parts are always of better quailty, there was a comparision on oil filters somewhere on the web that someone posted that shows just how the quailty of them can vary. So why shorten the life of an engine just to save maybe a fiver once a season?

I know a sea-rise is coming, courtesy of global warming, but I have not seen sea water cooling an an option for tractors so you are probably stuck with Yanmar for the impellor. Good luck with the filter!

Having battled Barrus (UK Yanmar importer) for cheaper price on one unit (exhaust elbow) it does seem that their overall UK pricing is based on higher than Europe/USA profit margins, so price is not always an indicator of quality. Secondly, most of the 'original' parts are made by subcontractors, so the same item made by them but 'packaged' in another way, in no way implies that it is substandard. It may be identical.

Look for generic supplies at more than one chandler and you may find one.

Otherwise, keep, keep, keep complaining, until one day you'll be heard.

Those with plenty of cash or not enough interest to see when they're being fleeced, do the rest of the world no favours - they forget that some people boat on a budget and every pound wasted is one that can't be used for pleasure!!

Your impeller is likely a Johnson, and the fuel filter is probably best changed for a Racor unit anyway.
A question there always elicits a response.

Whilst I agree that counterfeit parts are at best patchy and at worst wont fit or work, no one makes their own ancillary parts. These are contracted out to the specialist component suppliers for best price and best technology to the engine manufacturers. There is usually a license to supply the aftermarket with non OEM branded parts from these same manufacturing sources.

If you can marry one to the other with a bit of sleuthing, you will save money.
I dont see that I should spend more than I have to. I am also glad when I find a substitute in case I am am unable to locate a proper one at any time.

Be very careful about fitting alternative filters. I had a specialist Co. look up the specs on a list of "replacement" filters for my engine and I nearly had a heart attack when I found out not one of them had the same specs with regard to bypass pressure, flow rate, pore size etc. all they had in common was thread size and seal size and even a couple of th eseals were slightly different in size but would work. What worried me was the different flow rates, filter pore size and bypass pressures. As I was advised, "fit the wrong one and you could seriously damage your engine through poor filtration or reduced flow. Two in particular had bypass pressures higher than that of the engine's pressure relief valve so the filter gets blocked and the build up in pressure opend the engines bypass valve and no oil gets through the filter to the crank!

Yea, right I will risk 5~6K for a new engine for the sake of £6/year difference in price between replacements and OEM filters.

If your engine is used in some plant or other and you can obtain filters for your engine from a plant supplier/service center I would not risk "Oh, this one fits".

The pump impellor on my 1GM10 is £3.00 or so cheaper than the Yanmar OEM.....it looks like a jabsco pump to me and as far as I can see they are the same.

I totally agree with you Cliff.
I was pointing out that it is possible to source the correct part, but marketed under the suppliers own aftermarket brand. This would have the *exact* same specification, as it is made on the same line with the same materials.
As I pointed out, counterfiet are at best patchy and at worst wont work. i.e. do damage.
So we are in viulent agreement then.

Just to reinforce the point, I postedf here last year that I bought a Yambar impeller for my 1GM10 from a main agent, and after removing it from the sealed bag, found that the original manufacturers name and part number (from memory Johnson 825).

If anyone knows of a source of Johnson impellers, I would be interested.
