And they are Stainless Steel.

Ordinary steel ones are are £130 -£140 in the UK

Ben sells them for £65 plus shipping from the USA :D

http://www.exhaustelbow.com/

I'm not sure how much the shipping is by USPS (do they charge when it arrives ) but it's got to be cheaper than £130 and it's made from SS.

Thanks who ever gave me the link in the first place...

I'll be interested to hear how well they perform. 300 series stainless steels do not perform very well in conjunction with hot salt water, so it might be that one in that material will not last as long as a cast iron one. OTOH he might be using a better grade of SS.

Oh! I'll report back to say how well or not it copes, I'll check it annually...

A guy on the South Coast was going to make another batch of SS one's but he wanted £150. Probably the same type of SS - don't know.

If it will fit in a medium flat rate USPS shipping box it will be $60, if it needs the large box it will be $80. You'll be charged 20% VAT when it arrives.

That makes it £125-£145 then, hardly seems worth it. I have been told of cases of SS elbows suffering rapid corrosion, my mate has just reverted to a cast steel one after SS lasted 2 years.

I bought three from Ben last year for myself and other club members. From memory the total cost inc postage was less than £60.00 each, they looked to be made to a good standard but I sold my boat before I fitted it. I think you will find that the original exhaust bend is also tubular stainless steel but not polished.

Talking to someone else that has just imported one from Ben it comes to £116 so if it lasts a couple of years thats OK. I'll take it off to check next year and report back.

The exhaust elbow on my Yanmar 1 GM 10 looked fine on the outside, but further examination showed deterioration (Leak!) on the internal tube. I was astonished at the price of a new one, and finally found a company in Northern Ireland, who cut my existing one, inserted a replacement inner tube, and welded it all back together! That was a couple of years ago, and cost me £55 altogether.

I checked the elbow this winter, inside and out, and it is as good as new'

You could always give them a ring and enquire:

The person's name was Alex, and most helpful!

No association with them, except as an extremely satisfied customer.

Are you sure about that? I'm almost certain that mine is not, it's carbon steel. Easy to tell, try a magnet on it.

The elbow on my Yanmar 4JH4AE looks like dull matt finish stainless steel but there are 2 types of metal in the construction. I can't remember which way around but either the outer or the inner tube is magnetic. Yanmar must have specified a mix of stainless steel for some reason. I assumed the inner one might be austentitic for high temp. corrosion resistance from exhaust gas and the outer is better suited to use with lower temp. salt water.

They are pretty expensive and Yanmar suggested replacing mine very regularly (every 2-3 years I think). That seems excessive but I've taken to removing it every couple of years to check condition. The inside wall on the inner tube showed some early signs of pitting first time I checked it. I cleaned it , passivated the stainless and painted with a reasonably high temp. resistant epoxy. That seems to be lasting but I still check it. Only 4 years old but still looks fine, might not help but not doing any harm. A new one is very expensive at around £250 so worth trying to keep corrosion at bay.

Hi-rise elbow on 3gmf is bronze casting with threaded mild steel riser( which is cheap as chips). Why only on this one, the 1s 2s and 3s are the same design..?

I have searched the garage without any luck for an old 1GM10 one I have somewhere I am sure it was stainless steel but maybe the slightly magnetic type on the outside. On my new to me 2GM20f the inner tube was slightly perforated so I ground around the inside of the flange to remove the inner pipe and stainless welded a new curved piece of 316 stainless pipe in.
I will check it again at the end of next season, I did check the price at exhaust elbow.com and was surprised how much dearer it was for the 2GM20 elbow and that he only made them in batches, the three I bought last year was for the 1GM10.

I checked a friends original 2GM20 raw water exhaust bend on Sat and it had perforated on the inner pipe we checked it with a magnet and if it was magnetic it was very slight nearly impossible to tell.
