Have any of you bought a new or second-hand boat on the Continent because they are cheaper over there? If so I would be grateful if you would either call me on 0207 261 6580 or leave a number I can contact you on. Dick Durham, news editor, Yachting Monthly.

Greetings,

bought my Westerly 33 ketch in Holland in October, saved about £8000.

I also earn my crust surveying yachts and have been working in Holland and Germany for English clients regularly for the last three years. Generally the boats are better equipped and maintained. Also certain mainstream English designs which were exported to Holland in large numbers have not retained their value on the continent like they have here and are super buys.

Bought our Bav. in Spain, had it delivered to Wales, saved lots at 2001 prices, but the main importers here have decided to give a better exchange rate now, so not sure if the savings would be as great today.

In February 2001 we purchased a Dehler 34 from Holland, transaction went smoothly and we had a good trip back from Brunisse to Plymouth, 61 1/2 hours. The friends who viewed with us also ended up buying a Dehler 36 CWS and boat boats were brought back together. Savings were substantial and they spoke
English. I can be e-mailed on heatherquinn615@aol.com.

Dick,

I bought a new Bav 40 from a dealer in France 2001 - great deal, saved nearly 20K on whole boat (hull and options) over what was then Opal's pricing - since changed as they bought cheaper DM's forward. Also took out a French Lease which gives me a loan of 50% of value at effectively zero rate of interest. Even with the complication of the French lease, registration in France etc - all has gone really smoothly and I would certainly do it again.

Feel free to email me at Alan.Jackson@ansettworldwide.com if you want any other details.

Regards, Alan
