Cheap Westerly Centaur??

She does seem a good deal, as she's been re-engined.

Any buyer should have their eyes open and consider new sails, quite possibly new standing rigging & keel reinforcements, but they are relatively cheap considering the asking price.

Judging by the hatches & windows she looks like she was made towards the middle or a bit later in the production run ?

No doubt the Westerly Owners Association could help.

The photo ashore is, I think, of a different boat, no sign of the Westerly bow knuckle, different coveline position, and different forehatch. Nevertheless a Centaur at £3,600 is a fair buy if you want to remove and rebuild an engine, re-headline etc.

If you want to go sailing buy one that is ready to sail. We ( http://www.yachtsnet.co.uk/ ) are selling one that has a Yanmar 3YM run 50 hours, all new headlinings, etc.

I agree, the boat ashore is completely different !

The point - I think ? - Camelia is making is the closing sentence in the ad', ' has a depth sounder & plotter I think '; so the vendor seems to have no knowledge of the boat...

I've changed my mind, at first it seemed a bargain, now I say ' Run like the wind ! '

The pictures are of the same boat . I agree that the westerly knuckle isn't evident on the second piccy but I think it's just the print .Look at the cove line bow fender and anchor stowage .

If you mouse over to enlarge you can see the knuckle on the stb'd side

Agree with the other things and the forehatch is the standard GRP Westerly hatch in both pictures

You are right - I had not zoomed in. Nevertheless the lack of knowledge by the seller is a huge alarm bell ringing.

You should be grateful for the added publicity - particularly as you had nothing to hide. All people did was scrutinise the rather poor and indistinct photographs and make comments to alert potential viewers and buyers.

Remember, many who use this forum have vast experience in both buying and selling boats and your offer of exchange for a bike falls out of the normal parameters; add to that your apparent ignorance of what it is you are actually attempting to sell. So, why should they not be suspicious?

Besides, why are you bothered? Unless you intend selling more boats in the future.

If you do, I suggest you choose your words a little more carefully. Perhaps enlist the services of someone who can actually bring their experience to bear when formulating your prose.

If I advertised a bike with 'It has an engine, and spare front forks and a chain and petrol tank .....I THINK'. Do you think potential bike buyers would be impressed?

Would you, yourself, be impressed?

Ooops, sorry to open the proverbial can of worms!
All I wanted to do was bring the boat to the attention of someone who may be looking for a nice looking boat at a very reasonable price.
Cheque please, I'll get me coat......

If its the one listed as D93413, looks in very tidy order.

Yes but blackmatt has already explained that he knows little or nothing about boats, so the buyer might have got a bargain, all he needed to do was go and have a look.

He did not say that in his original EBay ad:

'westerly centaur 26ft, has standing headroom and a spacious layout, its out of the water for anti foul and anodes, i have these but havnt replaced or applied the anti foul, it could do with head linnings , i sailed this boat back from teignmouth a few months ago, its a very solid sea boat, overall its in reasonable condition for its age but could do with a few small jobs, its got a buhk 26hp ,inboard diesel that i ran for ten hours, it ran ok but leaked a bit of diesel, sails are good with some spares, the boats on the hard in a boatyard, its next to my unit and im a stainless steel fabricator so i can assist with any little jobs, id px for a motorcycle running or not, thank you...matt any questions 07450346742 I SHOULD ADD THERE IS SELF STEERING GEAR< DEPTH SOUNDER AND A PLOTTER , ....i think'

Having sailed the boat for at least ten hours he didn't know whether there was self steering gear, depth sounder and plotter.

I am not surprised that queries were raised.

I saw that ad before it was mentioned here. I assumed that he meant either (a) the stuff's there, but I haven't used it so don't know if it works or (b) the boats been lying out of use, and I hope nobody has stolen anything. It didn't look particularly suspicious.
