I am about to relocate down to Exmouth and need a swinging mooring for my twin keel Sadler 29 for the 2010 season. Need a swinging mooring as I have no wish for a marina style setup prefering to `float my own boat` so to speak. Access from a slip would be OK to launch/recover the tender.
Does anybody know of a cheap mooring around Salcombe (preferably) or even Plymouth or the Dart?
Failing that I will be looking at packing up bigboat sailing as the expense just does not justify the end.
PM with any contact details will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

there appear to be 3 moorings off starcross for sale in "boat moorings" on boats & outboards.
one of them might suit you.

You will probably find Plymouth or the Tamar quicker to drive to from Exmouth than Salcombe or the Dart (with the possible exception of Totnes) and a larger choice of moorings. Try contacting the numerous yacht clubs as though most have waiting lists to buy moorings it is possible that some members not launching this year will have moorings to rent, a lot cheaper than boatyard moorings or marina berths.

There is an advert in the Plymouth paper tonight:
Tamar swinging moorings for rent, deep n shallow up to 40ft.
Tel 01579 348326 or 07773 780817.
No price mentioned.

There are usually a dozen or so moorings available to buy outright on the Powderham side of the Exe estuary. If you contact Powderham Castle Estate they can furnish you with a list by email. You need to pay them an annual stippend, and a slightly larger fee to register initially - but that's only about £25 a year IIRC. You will also need to factor in an annual service of your ground tackle - which can be done for you by the Starcross garage - I forget the name. The moorings vary in price depending on their location - some are around £400 increasing up to £800 ish for the deeper ones. Some do dry, others don't. There's a water taxi service from Exmouth which you can use to access your berth - annual pass is something like £270. You will find that you stuggle to get insurance there outside of the April to October period due to strong wind over tide conditions in the winter - but there is The Retreat boatyard near the M5 bridge at Exeter which offer an excellent winter storage service.

While doing all of the above, get yourself on Trouts waiting list for a mooring at Topsham. It's about 4 or 5 years I believe. But probably well worth the wait. Topsham is lovely!

I have just purchased a mooring off Starcross...........it's now £185 + vat for new moorers to register and the annual Licence fee is £7.85 + vat per foot of boat length.
Phil at Starcross garage is very helpful, but is also very busy this time of year preparing customers moorings for the new season.
He did have one deep water mooring available for rent the last time that I spoke to him, but that was a couple of weeks ago.

Mooring search

Thanks guys for that information which I am now looking closely at. Like the policeman and his toilet, I now have something to go on!!

We have a twin keel Sadler in Topsham which is indeed lovely, very accessable from the M5 and offers a bit more protection from the weather than the moorings further down the exe. The drawback is that it takes longer to get out of the river and there is more mud to navigate- but then you have a b/k! If you do decide on the exe at least you wont spend hours in the car sat in traffic during the summer!
