Yep, The Slag of All Snacks - Pot Noodles 2 for the price of one at Sainbury's as part of the red nose day celebrations.

Stock up now, you know they will prevent at least one mutiny sometime this season.

Easy to prepare, easy to eat, just the job when you forget BST and end up bashing round a headland for an exta hour and you know you won't make the Chip Shop on time.

We'll be having our first ones when the last roller of anti-fouling has set solid in the cold and our hands are unfit to be let loose on real food.

I'm glad I took the trouble to read your post right through. For one awful moment I was thinking of something else when I read the subject matter.

Most supermarkets seem to have a good deal with 4 large tins of Heinz Baked Beans for 99p - everybody's favourite it would appear.

Re: 4 large tins of Baked Beans..

I would fit a gas alarm and ban smoking in the cabin :)

You jest, but on one boat where we were on a vegitarian diet, we had to pump the bilges regularly to prevent the gas alarm going off!

I guess enough of em could be useful as emergency buoyancy when you're chucked overboard.

NEWS FLASH: Scurvy has been reported on the increase in Devon, MCA believe cardboard snacks maybe the culprit, though victim post mortems show a distinct lack of contents when stomachs were emptied.

You may scoff!

I've been very glad to have Pot Noodles on board on several occasions. For lunches in really nasty conditions it's very rewarding to be able to prepare something warm as an alternative to the JDS "Cheese and lump-it" alternative. Boiling a kettle doesn't require much time below and if we are really fore-warned and fore-armed we might even have filled a flask. It pays to have a meal (well OK, maybe that's stretching terms a little) that can be prepared entirely on deck.

I prepared one for my 12 year old Canadian godson. He took one look and asked me if it was 'Barf' - as they call it. Nice word!.

Excess baggage

They would be on a hiding to nothing if they tried to market them as healthy, but drying food is one of the oldest preservation methods around, and if you read the label there is hardly anything but food contained therein.

If like the rest of the yachting world (and me) you have ever served up Cup-a-Soup and a sandwich, you have committed a far greated E-number sin.

I take the point about B Beans, but it's not half as much fun as the Slag of all snacks, or as tasty,

Re: Excess baggage

Especially the Bombay Bad Boy! Incredibly hot!
I've found them useful whilst working on the boat, quick boil of the kettle and a few mins later heating hot food. Easy and quick.
I do find it amusing that the Spicy Chicken Curry states on the back that it's suitable for Vegetarians!
I'd guess that a lot of people haven't tasted them.

Our man was off for a long awaited sailing weekend only to discover there was nowere to deposit non sailing teenage son, so son had to go sailing.
When they reached W/E destination the irratable (picture Kevin the teenager) son complained he was hungery, it was some time before dinner.
"Go below and get yourself a snack" his father told him.
"Already looked, there is nothing" he replied.
"Nothing? The lockers have plenty of food in" his suffering father told him."What is it you want?"
"somthing hot" came the reply.
"Well, what about a Pot Noodle?" His father exclaimed.

"WOTT, MEEE! COOK!!!" the teenager screemed!

We all have our own galley challenges I suppose.

Re: Power food

in the case of Baked Beans that would be Jet Power I would assume?

p.s. not exactly a great pot noodle fan myself either.. the Q of quick hot food in a limited (without Microwave or Oven) galley is a challenge.. one of the great challenges of sailing..

What to do other people use?

G'day Andy,

On a fishing charter boat for breakfast, I used to cook up a heap of onions, bacon and tomatoes, then add heaps of baked beans, served on toast, we called it Mexican Strawberries: the punters loved 'em.
