Hi all,

we are planning a 2 week West Country trip next year, starting from Poole. To extend it a bit so we don't have to rush, we thought of moving the boat across Lyme Bay the weekend prior to our hols and leaving her there for a week. Weather permitting, we should be able to get to Plymouth or maybe a bit further if we are lucky. Any suggestions where we can do it cheaper than the main marinas in Plymouth? Happy with a swinging mooring or mid river pontoon as long as there is water taxi available. Fowey would probably be ideal but may not get that far.

No specific suggestion but, if you are not going at the height of the season I know people who claim to have had success at negotiating a deal to be put in the least popular spots for a week or so

FYI the main marinas in Plymouth are terrible at explaining themselves. Sutton Harbour is actually much cheaper than it looks for long stays and is exceptionally well protected and close to transport. It's also quieter than you'd imagine, despite being next to the Barbican. The rate goes down the longer you stay (a little like Boatfolk, who actually state this on their website) but for some reason the Plymouth folk don't mention it. All of them seem to do 7 days for the price of 5 if only staying a week, but then it's something like a month for the price of three weeks (hard to actually nail this one down).

It's still not "cheap" but considerably more reasonable than the website tariffs suggest. I think we're paying around £900/month for an 11m in Sutton (at the nice end with all the facilities) and that's just pay and play visitor rates.

From our experience any further west and it's basically full, and would also be harder to get to/from. Falmouth Harbour have some decent moorings just off the town quay, and Truro has some up towards Malpas. Fowey doesn't really shorten the journey from Plymouth to Falmouth meaningfully enough to be a worthwhile stop unless visiting on purpose as it's quite far into the bay.

Plymouth is most likely the sensible option esp if catching a train. Given the aggravation in arranging a cheaper mooring it is probably best to bite the bullet and choose one of the larger marina's. For example Mayflower will put you up for around £240 ('25 prices) - that will be among the cheapest, includes electricity and parking is ok if you decide to hire a car for the return journey. Not the best shelter but generally ok in summer.
You can walk to the train station from Sutton Harbour (if travelling light) and it has little tidal flow and is well protected but there is the lock and parking is tricky esp in mid season.

I think you'd find that Salcombe is cheaper than Plymouth but you can't book anything in high season. Tell the Harbour staff if you might be leaving the boat, and they can put you on a vacant resident's buoy in the Bag if there is one. No weekly discount now though. There's a bus service to Totnes to pick up a train.
