Cheap PCs?

Re: thanks all

I can confirm crappy service from Dell thru India call centre. Called once to price up a system and was told if I wasn't buying now they were not able to talk to me. Told them I might be buying now or I might not depended on price. They took my number and never called back.

Needless t say took my money elsewhere.

Instead I had a small form factor machine built just for me by a guy on Ebay. cost me about £200 plus monitor and is absolutely superb. Great for watchin g DVD's radio, playing music. also ised as TV with Freeview USB thingy. Has a very handy set of card reader ports on the front so can program or read SD, mmC memory stick and CF cards.

All the best

Nick

The deed is done...

Found a local guy 10 minutes down the road who matched Dell's prices and included on-site warranty and an extra 40GB of disk. Let's hope it turns out to be good kit! At least I can bang on his door if things go wrong- has to be better that a trip to Bombay.

This will not help you Chris, but if anyone in the Plymouth area wants a cheap and cheerful computer then try the local CFE. They supplied me with a Pentium 3 recycled job (10gb HD, 128mb ram, 650MHz) for £70. 3 months guarantee; for a fiver a visit they will come out to you. Big fat monitor included. Brian

Check out THESE GUYS . They are very good and competively priced. Local company and don't have an Indian call centre! I just had a problem with Time/Tiny who use as call centre in India. Drove me me mad, and in the end demanded to speak to UK, where problem was sorted - well it would have been if AMTRAK had arrived to pick my laptop up yesterday! That's <censored> me for next week now! Waited in all day for the buggers to pick up and they never did! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Just wait till Monday /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

SWMBO wants to upgrade our PC & has been looking at PC's from Comet - Dell gets to many negatives.
Choice (towers only) now seems to be either a HP T849 (@ £540) or a Fujitsu Siemens SP P4 530 (@ £460).
Any 'expert' advice, able to help decide, would be gratefully accepted. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Interesting! I've normally found them cheaper. Just goes to show how competitive the market has become now. I can remember buying my first computer - an AMSTRAD, cost a grand! Hard drive was 250kbs! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
