Cheap, or backup tracking device

With the Apple ones, how do they relay their position?

If it’s cellular that’s fine, but Bluetooth won’t work as you’d have to be near the item anyhow? I see no mention in the article of them carrying a SIM card?

If it's anything like the airpods, it will only relay the last time it was connected to your phone.

They will use the existing “Find My” network if they come with Bluetooth range of random peoples iPhones or iPads.
Battery life is claimed to be up to a year.

“What if someone wanted to track you by slipping an AirTag into your coat or bag?
Apple's got around that issue by bringing in 'Unwanted Tag Detection'. You'll need to set up your tag with your own Apple device at the start, and if you then were to try and place it on someone else, they'd get a notification.”

Does that mean if the person who steals your boat has an Iphone, they get a notification :-0

Well that's what I was wondering - Apple haven't been very explicit about exactly what would or not trigger a notification.
I would guess that carrying the stolen jetski around in their handbag might well trigger it.

Yeh, I can see the sense, but that makes it useless as a covert tracker for your own property.

The tracker I suggested is excellent, and uses about £5 of data in the whole year I used it......

I believe they use a combination of Bluetooth and extra wide band (60 metre range) which is where these stand out from the competition and are more useful on something like a boat or tender.
Basically, if u lose an item with the air tag on it you go to lost mode. It will flag the tags to everyone’s iPhones until one locates the tag. It then lets you know where it was seen. Apple basically have millions of nodes with 60m range looking for lost tags.

I gave up with the Chinese TK series trackers. I made sure they were genuine Xexun as well. Found perfection with A Rewire Security device, cheap to run, great software, SIM free, works off strongest mobile network available.
