Up the mast for the first time today
Funny this should come up. I've been up my mast for the first time today.
The boat is new to me and I didn't entirely trust the halyard. So I made a couple of Prussic loops and applied them directly around the mast. One attached to a lifejacket as a chest line, the other as a foot loop to ascend.
Then I attached the dodgy halyard to my old climbing harness and up I went. Pretty easy all in all. Made easier by the fact I have a unstayed mast so didn't have to mess around with spreaders.
If the halyard had failed the prussic knots would have held me and enabled me to get down safely.
For the cheap option the Prussic knot is your friend..
