SWMBO came back yesterday from the Pound shop (Gosport) with a 24 led (white) "emergency "light array, in neat plastic case and sockets for 4 x AA batteries.
Tested it last night with 4 x 2500 ma Li Iron batteries ( Lidl £2.99) and the light output was excellent and ideal for a boat cabin. So the array costs £1 and the batteries £2.99, and are said to last for 30 hours (Duracell) not rechargeables. As the input is 6 volts am considering two in series linked to the boats house battery bank for a massive £2!

Got any photos? At that price, I think you may be getting a few requests - I'll take 10!

One thing you may consider though, your battery will rise above 12V and may blow the LEDs. Fitting a series diode will not only reduce this by 0.7v, but will also prevent damage if you wire them up the wrong way! You may also need a resistor.

I've already been down this route, see here - there is also more about LEDs here

[/ QUOTE ] That's a fair point that many people seem to overlook. My boat has a 24v domestic system but all the halogen downlighters are rated at 28v for just that reason.
