Two of us here in the marina fancy getting new stretchy (less squeaky) docking lines. Who's got the best prices these days?

100m of 14mm three strand polyester should do the both of us.

I've seen some quite cheap on ebay but can't see the quality through the computer!

Barry Edwards <bje@barryedwards.co.uk> at Boatropes ( http://www.boatropes.co.uk/Mooring Ropes ) provides high quality, low cost rope. He advertises on ebay and contributes to this forum from time to time; many recommend him. I have purchased a number of ropes from him and found the quality good and prices better than most; if nothing else get a quote.

I have no connection, just a customer.

Many thanks, I'll go and have a look now. Do you have any recommendations?

Nylon has by far the better stretch and when new its doesn't squeak. Polyester is more slippy but stretches less and may snatch where a nylon line would just stretch. "DockLines" have nylon inner cores with polyester covers which gives you slippiness and stretchiness, but they are more expensive. I just use nylon now. For a long time I used staple spun polypropylene which has no stretch but the hairy rope had good abrasion resistance and low friction, so it did not squeak at all but it did snatch. I am richer now, so I buy nylon. However, the staple spun was a success and I could go back to it; order a size bigger than nylon if you go this route.

A second recommend for Barry Boatropes here. His range is not especially wide, but if he has what you want then he usually has the best price. He will send you a short sample for nothing if you want to check the quality.

That's a fair bit cheaper than the polyester! Thing is though, I really need something with a bit of stretch as some folk around here don't know what a no wake zone is :-[

Another answer to increase the amount of stretch in a rope is to use more of it.... Bring your springs from the bow to near the stern and vice verse, Same with headlines/ stern lines take them 1 cleat further... It makes one hell of a difference, I normally take my stern line from outboard cleat to increase its length and make a better lead.

Before any one says how unsocial, often on pontoons it means you get your own cleat as others keep there lines shorter.... You just duck under or over there's to the free cleat in the middle

My normal mooring ropes are my old jib sheets, very little give in them but I rarely get snatching or squeaking issues.
