I popped out to B&Q this afternoon where I noticed a little 850w genny some months ago! arrived but nowhere to be seen......! had a tour with a very friendy man and found the little beast tucked away at aisle 6...the price was back then £99.98 now reduced to £79.98 WOW ! methinks saving some ackers!!.......Then the very friendly man shows me another genny but theres a catch it's only £49.99....( I hope you are keeping up! ) dillema! get's a trolly unpacks one genny at £49.99 and runs round to asile 6 unpacks the one at £ 79.98 and guess what they are the same with a diffrent jacket on!.....( are you still keeping up?) now heres the best bit.........the one at £49.99 has also got a outlet complete with plug and croc clips to run at 12v DC crickey!! you didn't see me trolly for dust incase they got the price wrong.....is that a deal or is that a deal....

Have to agree there are a lot of cheap disposable tools being sold at B&Q.

I purchased a band saw about a year ago for all the wood I had to cut whilst fitting out my boat.

Another great thing about their cheap tools, they have to be driving down theft too as the resale value cant be worth the risk of theives kinicking them! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I got a genny from my local Macro £59 the nearest chandler (about 2 miles from Macro) had the same item on special offer at £190. I managed to resist that bargin.

The Genny has now seen me through a winter scrub etc etc.

Re: Cheap (and VERY nasty) Generator !!!

Had a look at the Performance power one you quoted. Absolute crap to be polite about it.

12v charging - yes for a max 45Ah battery - max current 8 amps! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

240v ac 650 watts continous 850W peak

Nice warning on the unit to the effect this unit must not be used to power any electronic equipment.

Nice warning in the instructions to the same effect with the addition that doing so will damage the electronics. (note not "might" or "may" but "will")

Unit is also floating earth and must be grounded.

Unit is not weather proof and must not be exposed to direct sunlight, used in damp or wet conditions nor must it be stored in damp conditions.

Can be used for running incandescent lights and small power tools provided they do not have soft start or electronic variable speed control etc.

All in all a real cheap (and very nasty) generator. I would hold on to my pennies and buy a decent genny that can be used on the boat and can run electronic items - remember most battery chargers are "electronic" these days.

Re: Cheap (and VERY nasty) Generator !!!

It will do exactly what it says on the tin! it will power me little microwave! sandwich maker, and boil me kettle, run some lights and power tools but not all at once......this is only for emergencies! I suppose I could take me big 3.7kv but it's a bit heavy and it works fine with everything.....Have used it may times over the years when we have had power cuts/.TV is 12v no problem. I did say it was cheap!!! but it dons the job!

Too much knowledge can be a very limiting thing!

It does do what it sayeth on the tin

Bought one last year from Aldi.It will happily run a television/dvd player and my boat lights at the same time for hours on end or small power tools etc .
It is ideal for a bit of cheapskate lightweight power and is fairly quiet as well.
As the clincher it ran my 40 metres of rope light for 3 hours at our local river festival, mind you did cough a bit when load was applied.
Need a posh one then get a Honda.

Re: It does do what it sayeth on the tin

Like you say! will run happily all day the book that comes with it too many what if's also gobly gook HSE statements covering the liable suits....I got a very good honda 4 stroke 3.7 but it's very heavy bought this one for conveince!
