Sitting in my cabin/office aboard ship this afternoon, working away on my laptop, when suddenly theres a knock at the door.
Get up and answer door and as it opens in trots a dog quickly followew by 4 large Danish Customs officials.

"Excuse me sir, but would you mind vacating your cabin whilst we do a search"
Well you can't exactly refuse now can you?
Sh*t, b*ll*x, bu**er, etc. Missus had called me asking me to bring some ciggies home for some of her colleagues.
Sure enough, out they troop about 2 mins later carrying 6 cartons of cigs.
Nothing said at the time, but we'll sort it later.

Later comes & Captain knocks on door. "This is what you must pay to Customs."
Dkr 3975. Bloody hell £350 for 5 cartons(you are allowed 1) of fags. Christ!!!!
Thats 70 bloody quid a carton fer f^cks sake.

The biggest thing that pisses me off, is that I don't even bloody smoke!!!!!!!!!/forums/images/icons/mad.gif

Hmmm. Hard luck, But were you not in international waters at the time. Suppose not. Well I would have thought you would have some excuse if bringing them to England.

No one can force me to come here.<font color=red> I'm a volunteer<font color=blue>

You should have asked for them to put them in Bond until you were back in international waters. They can even be bonded in a lockable drawer in your Cabin.

I know its a long time ago but when I bought fags from Captains bond they were 10 shillings for a 200 carton, but then I only got paid £2 week as an apprentice/oik..............but glad to know some things dont change..the knock on the door from the rummage squad........

What I would like to know is, as the cigs hadn't left the vessel and she would be leaving at some point to go back into international waters, is the fact that they were in my cabin enough to warrant a fine?

My memory grows dim but I seem to remember the regs were that they should have been locked in the bonded store before arrival and you could have got em out again after leaving but......found in your cabin when docked........ouch....../forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Ok. when enroute to town, a customs declaration must be signed to say that if you have any, they must be within the limits. It's not declaring that's the problem.
Of course, if they were still locked in the bond, then they would no longer be available in town. So what would be the point in purchasing more than your entitlement in the first place.
Answer is simple, just don't get caught. If you hide them up somewhere which is attributable to no one, then if they find them, they just confiscate, as no-one to blame. Therefore, no fine can be levied.IMHO

I agree, one should always re-bond them but normally as long as they have not been taken ashore and the vessel's flag is not that of the country that one is in, then usually the Customs Officer will ignore them provided of course there is not far more there than one would need for personal consumption whilst the vessel is in port.
Yup! Tony, I too remember the 10 shilling a carton days and 7/6p for Whiskey.

Not sure answer is that simple!
If found anywhere on ship and not atrributable to specific individual customs can still decide attributable to master/owners and take action.......?
Basic answer is not to have more than you should have anyway and sod trying to do favours if it can land you in the cacky....!
also IMHO, of couse.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Anyways! Sounds to me that the Master had given access to his bonded sales records otherwise why would Customs head straight for H's cabin?

Not just my cabin Byron, I just happen to be the first one in the door. Searched the others too. I wasn't the only one caught out.
