cheap engine oil for your diesel

thanks vyv - i had no idea i was creating such a monster - all i wanted to do was help people save money. the reason you give for the yanmar oil being upgraded yet still (they say) being suitable for their engine strikes me as odd though. if as you say - and I have no reason to doubt it - they simply want a larger markup rebadging a lower grade of oil would surely have given them a bigger profit. unless of course they simply buy inexpensive oil and the new stuff was more plentiful and therefore easier to rebadge as Yanmar and they took a punt on the risk to their engines.

I don't have details on either company's lubricant selection philosophy but when I looked at Volvo's it was clear that the spec was fine for the big turbocharged engines but IMO too basic for small yacht auxiliaries. I assume Yanmar have done the same. Makes some sense in that demand for oil for the big engines must considerably outweigh that for ours. Are they going to be too concerned if yacht auxiliary engines only last ten years instead of 25?

I got a little bit perturbed and sent an email to Beta. This is the reply, so I'm not going to worry any more although i don't doubt any of the above technical expertise

Hi, As long as the oil is mineral based and 15w40 it will be ok.
Kind regards

Costco do oil at a reasonable price if you have one near you. Usually castrol and mobil.
Your local oil merchant will often be happy to sell small quantities to the public.
As for manufacturers oil, as far as I know few if any engine builders own a refinery so most if not all manufacturer branded lubricants are just re-brands of someone else's oil. JCB 15w /40 for example is Shell Rimula 15w/40 which is fairly standard for most marine diesels. I used it in the 1960's lister gennys on my old tug and it is used in Mermaid's modern JCB based units so it has spanned the years well. My boss used to come onboard for a couple of litres everytime the van needed topped up too.
