I'm sure this has been covered before, but.....
Just completing Selway/Fisher 10ft motor canoe, and fitting out.
Previous SF 14ft cruiser fitted with plumbers foam pipe insulation all around fender just beneath gunwale, worked really well.
Dead simple, just string a rope around gunwale, thread 1m lengths of pipe insulation with screw eyes at each joint,
gaffer tape reinforcements every 300mm,works really well (stood up to some rather fierce locks on the River Meuse)
OK, not a permanent solution, but, hey, cheap as chips, and lasted 3 years on my 14footer.
And, as the insulation has a split, easy to replace any worn bit.
