Cheap diesel engine for DIY noticed on flea bay

John behave yourself! No man of the cloth would wish that disaster area upon any one surely.
(well unless they had an older and or worse one)

Would make a superb anchor - better even than a Stuart Turner as it has more knobbly bits to dig into the mud.

Sabb are still in business and the basic design has not changed so parts are still available from them at www.sabb.no although you may need to learn norwegian before you can understand their website. They're reputed to be the only purpose designed marine engine. (But they are noisy and heavy)

I thought Yanmar and Lombardini claimed that as well! I wonder what the truth is?

Lots of firms claim it, but when you look at some that do, not so sure it is a good recommendation! BTW don't think Lombardini do - just another marinised industrial engine using loads of aluminium, not always first choice for use near seawater.

I'm sure I saw a Saab engine running at an Earls Court Boat Show years ago - seemed pretty quiet.

Is that the one that has some sort of counter-rotating flywheel to reduce vibration?

Yes, the Sabb used to run continuously in a Plymouth Pilot launch - used to drive me mad as the stand was opposite ours. It was on an outside wall and ducted the exhaust through a window. Don't know how they got round H&S - probably bribed the unions!

They are quiet ticking over, but horrible when you want any power out of them. Needed really heavy beds to absorb the bangs!

I have a 10hp Sabb in my boat,i would have bought that engine as a spare in a heartbeat if I had known about it.

but these engines are bullit proof and only go wrong by applying extreme numptyism.

if you manage to run it without water the head will warp and a recon one is ££££££s, mine is very quiet and almost vibration less, and it is bolted right on to the engine bearers ,mine is a 1974 vintage and. it has a sweet spot at around 1000revs that pushes my 28foot boat along nicely with nil vibration.
