We will be sailing across the Atlantic in May 2012 and want to leave our boat in southern France from mid june to mid Oct while we hike in Spain. Chirpy is 37ft
with a 5ft 6 inch draft. We do not mind dropping the mast to enter the canal system as we suspect that will save us some money and we understand that we may have to leave it on the hard which is fine. We have managed to find very reasonable rates of storage on both the west and east coasts of the USA (140 dollars per month) but all of the sites we search for the Med just guide us to marinas that are way beyond our pocket. If anybody knows of an economic, reasonably safe place, to leave our boat in southern France we would be very grateful to hear from you.

Hi Paul 66,

Here is the place to start looking, on Grehan's site.

Navy (pronounced NAVVY) Services, Port St. Louis du Rhone is often used.
Up the Rhone itself (mast unstepped) there are a few options.
However even ashore temperatures are usually far lower in say St. Jean de Losne on the Rhone than on the Med itself, although this was the year when we had lower temperatures than even before everywhere except Brittany, which escaped the Siberian air.
If you are good at winterising your vessel, there should be no problems.
Best of Luck with your plans.

storage solution

Thank you PaulClan, storage has now fallen from 7030 euros to 1800 euros thanks to your tip. Port Napoleon and Navy services seem to be a good solution as we can keep the mast up for some autuminal cruising. I feel a lot more confident arriving back in the Med now, twenty years ago there was always a good place to stay via word of mouth but with the popularity of boating and the strong euro I was a little concerned we would be out of our league. Not so, thanks to the exponential word of mouth power of the internet.
thank you Paul

WHAT!!!

In the middle of summer:eek:

We are based in Port Napoleon, next door to Navy Service. You can get the prices for both places on their web sites. They are both dry ports and prices on the hard are a lot cheaper than in the water. You have to pay for lift in and out of course and pressure washing, if needed.

If you have no joy on the web, please PM me and I will sort prices out for you.

5'6" draft would be touch and perhaps no go in the Canal du Midi... given the present drought.

Hi Digby Dog,
Yes, thanks for pointing that out!
Wonder where the OP is going after mid-October, I jumped the gun there!Hopefully somewhere where there is no cold!
